HR945 does not refer to a single ship.It is a convoy number. A convoy could consist of a few ships to hundreds. Many ships formed up at Newport news, a lot from Gulfport States. My guess because of the odd number (larger convoys had HX, SC,ON, etc) and the fact that he must have been on a troop carrier, only a few fast ships in the convoy. Troops were usually carried over on fast ships that could out run the slower U-Boat. I've got a list of a lot of convoys, but HR945 is not amongst them.
I recall there was a unit or two that passed through Italy and ended up in the far east.
