Major Earl L. Muchway

Hello, I just recently won a lot at an auction of old military things and I have a briefcase full of newspapers and files from Earl L. Muchway. I have his personal file filled with files and I believe some photographs and very old newspapers with articles and photos of him. Ive been trying to find information out about him by googleing his name but cant find much. Does anyone know anything about him and have reccomendations on what I should do with all of his stuff? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

    Hi,
I am a collector of 381st bomb group memorabilia and would be interested in buying anything you dont want! Some of my collection will soon be displayed at the 381st BG museum in Ridgewell UK.

Hi there, I have a bit of information:

He was a Pilot O-735433 with the 534th Bomb Squadron. Arrived Ridgewell 6/43 and left 3/44

I'll see what else I can find.

A few snippets from the 534th Squadron Diary. The remainder of which can be viewed online at www.381st.org.

    July 26 1943 - Hamburg
      8th April 1944

The Flying Fortresses were again over Berlin today, paving the way for the imminent invasion by knocking out their air training base at Oldenburg. Although the weather was good there was no enemy air opposition. The only challenge the bomber formation received was from the ground, where large AA batteries put up a heavy field of flak over the target. The 381st dispatched 29 aircraft, seven from this squadron, the formation under the command of 1st Lt Earl L. Muchway who flew in “Colonel Bub” with 1st Lt Howard N. Kesley as his pilot. Bombing was reported to be good.

It seems he ended his war as a 1st Lieutenant after completing 25 missions many of which as squadron lead.

Sorry, much of that didn't come out - I'll try again.

If not, go to www.381st.org and search for muchway in both the 533rd and 534th Squadron Diaries.

OK, so this forum doesn't like tables. Lots of stuff there but you'll have to do the searches yourself.

The non-profit 381st BG Memorial Association (900 members) described on this website maintains digital files on the group history and assists veterans, descendants, and others who are researching the group war history.  We encourage our members to have their materials scanned to digital files for preservation before sale or donation to maintain the group history and to make them more widely accessible for research through the website and the association archives.  There are a number of museums dedicated to the Army Air Force history who would be interested in the original materials and who serve as historical research centers.

If you would like any further information about these options, plese write to me directly at the address below.

    Hello,

I'm Earl Muchway's nephew. He married my dad's sister after the war.

After WWII he went back to civilian life. But that was short lived because when the Korean War stared, he was recalled to the Air Force.  After that war, he decided to make the Air Force a career. After all, by then he'd given the service about 8 years of his life. Eventually he transferred to the Strategic Air Command. In the late 60's or early 70's he retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Col.

I realize it's been quite awhile since you posted you message. If you still have the contents of the briefcase, I'd appreciate any information you can pass along. I was only 7 or 8 the last time I saw him. He was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base at the time. If you'd prefer to contact me directly, my email address is   rwc_jim@yahoo.com

    Thanks in advance,
    Jim Smith

I agree with Kevin, it would be nice to get picturers of his things for the association before there sold.   Sigvard
