In the movie 12 O'Clock High, the 918th had a Toby mug on a mantle that was turned around whenever there was an upcoming mission. The 918th is based on a real unit, the 306th.

Did units have something like a Toby mug that they would use to indicate upcoming missions, like what was shown in the movie?

Having watched that movie more times than I would care to admit it has always been my impression that the mug was nothing more than a prop dreamed up by Bernie Lay, Jr. but I am sure there are other opinions out there.

I do love that movie (might need to watch it again today!). Hal is likely right merely a studio prop for this film but a very nice dramatic addition...
    Buying the mug back postwar
