B24J forced landing Greatstone Kent England

    Hi
    Hope you can help me. I noticed some wreaths and wooden crosses on a fence in a car park at Greatstone. After enquiring on a facebook page it is there to commemorate the crew of a B24 who crash landed there on 20th June 1944. There was a memorial on the site but this was taken away by local council. I would like to get ti replaced with a proper memorial and would like to find out more about the crew.
    They were based at Medfield in Suffolk. Part of 491 bomb group. They were coming back from a mission to bomb V1 launch sites in Northern France. A shell blew off the nose over France killing the bombardier and navigator. They lost 2 engines and a 3rd over the Channel leading to the forced landing, two crew jumped out before the landing and were killed. The pilot was trapped by his legs with the tide coming in and a young RAF doctor dived down through the water to free him he survived with 6 others

    Pilot 1st Lt Charles Stevens
    Bombadier William Weng
    Navigator Harold Meng
    those who jumped - S/sgt Fulbright and Sgt Park
    I would like to find out where these guys came from, how old they were and what happened to the surviving crew if possible. The plane could still be seen until the 1960's but must be under the sand now

    Appears to have been B-24 H, serial number 42-95191. MACR 8232. Will see if I can post any pages from the MACR

    Several pages from the MACR attached. Unfortunately the usual page with the next of kin information and home addresses is not included with this MACR. Note that the Pilot's statement mentions a Lt Tweed,that name does not appear in the crew list.

    Found this photo of the original memorial on flickr. If you Google 42-95191 you will get numerous hits, unfortunately most have few useful details, but apparently a number of people have sought information about this crew over the years.

    Believe that EUS means 'evacuated to the US' but not sure, cannot find an exact definition.

    Possibly, no clear description of the extent of his wounds but he was hit by flak shrapnel.

    Tweed was also pinned in the wreckage to such an extent that he was unable to free himself. Most likely suffered injury to his legs and lower body as a result.

    Interesting write up from Tweed's son.

    Guy Tweed, son of 2nd Lt Guy E Tweed, writes:

    " My father, then 2nd Lt. Guy Tweed, was the pilotage navigator on the downed B-24J. He was also the officer who was trapped and nearly drowned in the fuselage.

    If Sqn. Ldr. D. D. Morrell is still alive, please give him my thanks for saving my father’s life.

    Dr. Morrell may remember my father’s colorful language (so I was told) when he regained consciousness to discover his rescuers preparing to cut off his good leg in order to free him from the aircraft. Apparently my father was persuasive, as the good leg survived – it was finally extracted from the wreckage by cutting his flight boot and then pulling his foot and leg free of the debris that had trapped him in the aircraft.

    All in all, it was a pretty horrific day for my father, and it was his last combat action of the war. He spent the better part of the next two years convalescing from his injuries. If this incident had not occurred, though, I wouldn’t be here, as my father, after he returned to the States, met my mother (who was an Army nurse convalescing from rheumatic fever contracted in the jungles of Burma) at an Army Hospital (Crile Hospital – the forerunner of The Cleveland Clinic) in Cleveland, Ohio.

    There is an exhibit that includes another description of this incident and the photograph in your article at the Eighth Air Force Museum in Savannah, Georgia. If you ever find yourself in that area, the chance, it is worth a visit. I am attaching a copy of another photo (see above right) of the aircraft taken from a longer range that I believe is included in that exhibit.

    Thanks to all who have taken the time to remember this incident. We all have a great debt to those who fought the good fight so many years ago."

    "Lt Stevens was shot down on 26 November 1944 with his second crew which contained none of the other members of his first crew he became a POW."
