This B-17 was grounded due to engine troubles for 2008. Was back in the air beginning of this season 09.... but... what we determine to have been during our display at the 40th CW event May 24th, she blew number one engine again (!). Aircraft seen to be trailing black trail of smoke on most pictures taken on that day. Unconfirmed sources told me today (Sunday 31st May) that SALLY B had indeed blown number one and had returned to Duxford base, after displaying with us on the 40th CW event, with a feathered number one engine. She did not display on May 25th as expected, the following day, at the American Cemetery, Madingley ceremonies (Armed Forces Day here in UK). I have no other news but assume she is perhaps again grounded? This number one engine had only just been repaired-replaced by the operator prior to start of this 2009 season.

Ian

Re:B-17G SALLY B to perform at 40th Combat Wing Reunion, Thurleigh, England May 24th 2009 (Al Crosson)

Ian-

Great picture. Wasn't there, at one time, an insurance issue regarding Sally B's flying future? Was this ever resolved, or am I thinking of a different B-17? Regards. Al

Re:B-17G SALLY B to perform at 40th Combat Wing Reunion, Thurleigh, England May 24th 2009 (Ian White)

Hello all...
A quick insert... one of the photo's taken of SALLY B during her 8 minute display, 40th CW Reunion 'Combat Wing Day'. Powering in with smoke on, simulating a return home on two faultering engines. A scene very often seen right across the ETO at all the 8th AF bases.

Great blue sky, yes it was that blue and that hot!!

Ian W
B-17G SALLY B to perform at 40th Combat Wing Reunion, Thurleigh, England May 24th 2009 (Ian White)

Hello forum...
Ive been away from the AAF for extended leave, working on the 40th CW Reunion.

At the eleventh hour, the Combat Wing Day on May 24th, Thurleigh Airfield, has secured the display of B-17 Preservation Ltd B-17G SALLY B.
