Use either 0356 Service Squadron or 0356 Materiel Squadron as a search term and you will pull up the abstract for the history of this unit, which you can order. That will provide even more information than what I had (although the abstract of the history did narrow down the activation date I had earlier as probably March 1942).

I am guessing that you were probably not aware that Air Service Squadrons were representative of a type of squadron that originated in 1940 as Materiel Squadrons, Air Base Group then became Materiel Squadrons in January 1941 and Service Squadrons in the summer of 1942. Many of those that remained active in 1945 became Air Service Squadrons, Air Materiel Squadrons, or Air Engineering Squadrons, so using materiel squadron as a search term may not have occurred to you.

This unit was constituted on 28 Jan 1942 as the 356th Materiel Squadron and activated 17 Mar 1942, probably at Salt Lake City AAB, UT. It was redesignated 356th Service Squadron 13 Jun 1942 and 356th Air Service Squadron, probably in early 1945. In the April 1942, it moved to Hill Field, UT and later to RAF Atcham, England, where it remained until it was disbanded around April 1945. It was probably originally part of the 329th Air Base Group, was reassigned to the 42nd Service Group, and at Atcham was probably assigned to the 333rd Service Group. At Atcham, it was a maintenance unit that supported the 495th Fighter Training Group.

Hi All, I am the FNG, but I am trying to find info on the 356th Air Services Sq. My Great Uncle served in it during WWII in the UK, that's about all I know. Would love to find info relating to insignia and patches.
I too served in the UK, during the Cold War, and we used to discuss our time there, but more about beer and women, hehe.
He recently passed and I started to think it would be cool to find out what he was really into. I know he danced a lot.
Anyway, anyone with info, let me know?

Thanks, bernies, that seems to cover it pretty well (and my correspondent seems to have lost interest....?) In any case, I was glad to see the wealth of information to be found in this station list. It is a great resource.

I haven't heard further from my interested party but I did find this in Maurer, Maurer:

"VIII Air Support Command

"Constituted as VIII Ground Air Support Command on 24 Apr 1942 and activated on 28 Apr. Assigned to Eighth AF. Moved to England, without tactical components, Jun-Aug 1942. Redesignated VIII Air Support Command in Sep 1942....

"Stations....Sunninghill, England, 19 Oct 1942-1 Dec 1943..."

Is it plausible that 31st Statistical Control Unit was assigned to VIII Air Support Command at Sunninghill? Or if not, where? Or does the originally cited "31st SCU" mean something altogether different?

Units at Sunninghill were assigned to Ninth Air Force Headquarters.

If this unit was at Sunninghill, it is the 31st Statistical Control Unit (earlier the 31st Machine Records Unit).

That is an impressive list, Mark. Barring objection from aatsiti1 or you, I'd like to post a related query here: Someone on another forum has referred to an 8th AF unit as "31st SCU" which I initially interpreted to be a Signal Corps unit. You list signal companies 311, 312, and 315, so I suppose a digit might have been clipped from one of these to get "31st" or do you have a more likely candidate for "31st SCU"?

I don't know if the 'Eighth Air Force Unit List of 31st May 1944' is wrong? But Station 468 should be Bury St. Edmunds and not Bury St. Edmonds. This is a fairly common error and thought you may like the correct spelling for your own records.
