picture info? - 07/17/2008 07:29:13 PM ( #1 )
On p85 of "The 464th Bomb Group In WWII" by Hill/Karle, there is a picture of a P38 flying amongst a formation of B24's for protection. The P38 has an engine shut down. Did this happen often? Is there any way to know when this specific picture was taken or what mission it was on?

I ask because a veteran of the 464 casually mentioned to me the other day that he remembered just such an incident and the P38 was flying with his box for protection. As soon as he said it I remembered seeing the picture but it took me another few hours to remember where I saw it. I don't presume this picture is from that day but it would be neat if it was.

Anyone?

Thanks, Chuck.

I couldn't tell you how often this happened, but I've read accounts describing such.  None with respect to the 464th.

Since the book doesn't give so much as a credit for the image, I'm very doubtful anything can be done.  The image has no identifying details on aircraft or ground.

Unless you can track the source the image, the best you can probably get is further details from the 464th member.  Did he keep a flight log?  Could he perhaps provide the date?  What was the time frame of his deployment?  Probably doesn't account for much but does it fall near the time on Page 85?  I saw this doesn't account for much since there is no guarantee the photo coincides with the time from that page.  Did he also mention a feathered prop?

Of course, these won't get you absolute confirmation, but at least it's something.

This is probably a huge longshot, but I wonder if you could contact the publisher/authors and get any information.

Another source would be the 464th Bomb Group itself.  If they have a continuing Group publication it could be possible to have the photo submitted for comment.  Or it could be circulated at their upcoming reunion in Arizona.

Best of luck to you Chuck.

Chuck and Tommy,

At the moment there is no historian for the 464th, Betty Karle passed away in June.  It is assumed that the material she had will be returned to the Group at the reunion in September.   Am sure her daughter will be there.  It is believed that this will be the final reunion of the Association.  I have been looking for a reply to my emails from Hill since 2002.

Tony Schneider has stated he will keep the newsletter going (twice per year) as long as finances hold out, so there is a possibility that he could put the question in a newsletter and see if there is ever any feedback.

Tommy I have a listing of 83 MACRs for the 465th BG if you would be interested.  I have verified this listing with Mr. Moxley.  The listing that is posted on this website has the very first listing in error.  That is a 455th BG MACR and aircraft, but I also have one on my listing that is not on this website.  If interested please contact me at my e-mail address.  The listing is sorted by MACR, Date, and A/C Serial number. and shows the pilot name.

Regards,
