Major Bert Marshall's "Jane III" at time of September 18 to 22nd Frantic VII Shuttle Mission. The 355th FG flew maximum effort 64 ship escort to 95BG, 100BG and 390BG Fortresses to drop supplies on the Polish underground.
Marshall led this mission at the lead of 'Borax" Squadron comprised of 354Fs, 4th FG and 361st FG Mustangs, while Major's Lenfest, Elder and Sluga led the 354FS, 357FS and 358FS Mustangs respectively.
The 355th shot down four while losing two (one to friendly fire) and landed at Piryatin, Russia after 8 hours in the air. One B-17 was lost to German fighters.
All received the Polish Cross of Valor from the Polish Government for this effort.
Following landing at Piryatin, they escorted the bombing mission to Szolnok, Hungary and on to Foggia, Italy before returning on September 22 to Steeple Morden to land with visibilty at 'minimum' with no losses.
