new user looking for information on B-17 down off coast of France Nov 17, 1942

My uncle Sgt. Welcome L. Talbot was a crew member (top turret gunner) on a 97th Bomb Gp. B-17 (MACR# 15097--serial# 42-2969) enroute to North Africa and either developed engine trouble or was shot down off the coast of France, November 17, 1942.  This plane was also carrying BGen Asa N. Duncan.  Maj. John Knox was the pilot.  I have had one report that the plane was engulfed in flames, went down and quickly sank.  Mae West jackets were spotted and a dinghy with one man in it.  There were no survivors although I believe two bodies were recovered.  Evidently a plane flew over the site for quite some time until ASR arrived.  Other crew members were SSgt Roger J. Arendt,  SSgt Arthur B. Spell, TSgt Paul W. Padgett, 1stLT Leslie S. Birleson,  1stLT John C. Roysden, 1stLT Joshua Kaplan, and  1stLT Clark M. Garber, Jr.  We have wondered if this is all we will be able to obtain, or if there were any written reports, or anyone who may have knowledge of this incident.  Thanks very much for any additional information.

Have you sent for your uncle's IDPF?  If not go to the home page here and click on research. Scroll down until you see 293 file. The address is there. It takes a while but may have a lot of information.

Also he is listed in the WWII Memorial site.  From Isabella Co MI. Received the Pruple Heart. Memorialized at The Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England.

Hope this helps.
Regards
Mickey

If you go to the site you can look up the others in the registry

A photo of Birleson can be found at this link.  He is in the top photo of the Kirtland, NM bombardier class 42-05.

Jan...This is from Dick Drain's 5th Wing History of Aircraft Assigned :

42-2969   341  Transfer from 305th BG 4 Nov 42.  MIA 17 Nov 42. Engine caught fire, plane exploded, and crashed into Bay of Biscay on deployment to N.Africa. Pilot Clark Garber. Flight Commander John Knox, passenger B/Gen Asa N. Duncan,Kaplan,Roysden,Birleson,Padgett,Talbot,Spell,Haddox,Arendt. All KIA. MACR 15097.

The MACR should give the full details as known at the time. I agree with Mickey, you should also send for his IDPF.

(Dick Drain spent a lot of time at the Archives, compiling the information for his book, so, I think his information is very accurate. He painstakingly took care to make sure of accuracy).

Thanks for your help and information, Jim.  I'm not sure much else will ever be known.  I thought perhaps since BGen Duncan was on board the same plane
as my uncle there might be additional information.  I do have the letters that my Grandmother wrote to each of the crew members family as well as some of
their replies to her.  I think I will send for his IDPF.

Thanks for your service to our country!

Thanks, Mickey.  I plan to send for my uncles' IDPF, as you suggested.  I did just copy off his service record from the NARA website.  I do have his Purple Heart.  I appreciate the information and quick response to my listing.  There probably isn't much additional information, but I would like to get everything I can.

Appreciate the information, Dave.  I downloaded the picture to add to my files.
I'm thinking of purchasing the book The 97th Bombardment Group History Book Venit Hora.  This was referenced for the information I received from the Library
at the Mighty 8th Museum in GA.  Thanks again.

Jan....There is a website...www.abmc.gov which has Welcome L.Talbot listed in the American Battle Monuments Commission Cemetery at Cambridge American Cemetery at Cambridge England.,on the Tablets of The Missing.

Afte you access the www.abmc.gov ,  go to Units, partway down the page and enter 341, and then look for your uncle.

Thanks again for the replies to my posting.  I think I will try the address for MACR at College Park, MD, as well as purchasing the Venit Hora book.  I had another question...any ideas as to how I might be able to find a listing of the
missions my uncle had flown prior to his death?  He arrived in England Aug. 1942 and his plane went down Nov. 17, 1942.  I'm not sure if the crew he flew with on his last mission was the same crew he had flown with prior.  Someone had told my grandmother that my uncle's crew was handpicked for that last mission.

Also, wanted to let folks know about the new Air Force Memorial which will be completed and dedicated this October (2006) in Washington D.C.  My husband works for the foundation that is responsible for getting the Memorial built.  It is located adjacent to Arlington Cemetery, on a knoll overlooking the Pentagon--on the site of the old Navy Annex.  This Memorial is not only to honor current Air Force members, but to honor all men and women from the Army Air Corps till the present and into the future.

Thanks again.  Jan
