Information Request
-
07/19/2008 12:32:20 PM
I am looking for information concerning my Uncle, 2nd Lt. Lester Ralph White O-889243. He was a Flight Engineer on a B-29 I believe, assigned to the 462 Bomber Group. His airplane was forced down on November 21, 1944 after a bombing run on Omuru. Lt. White and two others were captured by the Japanese, and killed by their captors. This information was obtained from a newspaper clipping given to me by my father, I am not sure of the accuracy the article . The article indicated that there was a "War Trial" in which five Japanese were sentenced for their participation. As of this time that is all I know. I would very much like to know as much information as is available about these brave men. I'm looking for official documentation as to where they served, when they served and details about those they served with and eventually died with. Any one with information regarding this incident or my Uncle, that you could share, would be very helpful and greatly appreciated. I have been to several web sites but can find no record of my Uncle so far. He is buried in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville, KY Thank you for any assistance that may be provided. Donald, Do you have any additional information, such as the name of his pilot? The database on this site lists two B-29s from the 462nd that were lost that day, 42-6278 and 42-93848. I was unable to find anything on footnote.com about either aircraft. Here are two sites where you can obtain some information: http://home.att.net/~sallyann6/b29/56years-4411.html Scroll down the page to the 21st. and: http://www.geocities.com/jr462nd/Hellbirds.html Go to the lower right of the page for the link to 'contents' Not a lot, but it's a start. Hal

Donald: Have you tried this web site: http://www.geocities.com/jr462nd/Hellbirds.html If you haven't, it might be worth a shot. Lots of luck with your research! I've been there...and I know how frustrating it can be. Thanks to many who monitor this site, I've been able to finally put some of the pieces together. Still working on some things though. Don't give up! Charl

Donald, One more thing. One of the crews lost that day was the Killebrew crew. There is a photo of this crew on this page: http://www.geocities.com/jr462nd/770th_crews_1.html Click on the picture to enlarge and see if you recognize anyone. Hal update: Re-reading your post and the information on the Pacific War Chronology web site, it appears your uncle was probably with the McMillan crew on 42-93848.

Jules, One of the most enjoyable things about this forum is the sharing of information and sources. Glad you were able to get something useful out of that web site but sorry if it was the discovery of bad news. Regards, Hal

Thanks guys, I've been to boith of these web sites, they were useful and provided some info I did not have. But I still do not have all the answers. It looks like Aircraft 42-93848 might be the one I'm looking for. I guess I'll have to buy the MACR to find out. I'm still diggin!!
