Oldest B-17 to be restored - 07/15/2008 11:28:10 AM
The oldest surviving and only existing "D" model B-17 Flying Fortress, The Swoose, is being transferred to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

"It's just better for both institutions for the aircraft to go back to the National Historic Collection. Our restoration crews can use their knowledge and expertise from restoring the Memphis Belle to restoring The Swoose," said Sarah Parke, public affairs specialist for the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

The fuselage and a couple engines already have arrived and after more parts arrive in coming weeks, the plane will go through a technical inspection to determine "exactly" how to restore it and how long it'll take, she said. Restoration is expected to last a couple years.

Visitors can see the restoration process starting with parts that have arrived every Friday by signing up for a behind the scenes tour at www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/visit/tours/index.asp.

The Swoose was originally called Ole Betsy and flew in the first combat mission after Pearl Harbor, according a press release. After repairs in 1942, it was renamed The Swoose and used as Gen. George Brett's personal aircraft before being used as high-speed transport for the remainder of World War II.

"It's just another aspect of military aircraft we can use to tell the story of the Air Force in World War II. It enhances the collection and tells a different aspect of history," Parke said.

Gary: I am pleased to hear that good news as it has been a long struggle. For those that may not be familiar with this famous airplane I have a photo that I took of it in better days at Mines Field (LAX today) in May 1946 but I don't see the IMG code here to post it. What is the new procedure?

Gary,
Is the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force restoring it for the Smithsonian and the returning it? Or are we adding it to our collection? (I say OUR, since we are locals) I always thought that "Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby" would be sent to another museum after the completion of the "Memphis Belle". Wouldn't that be sweet to have all 3, wing tip to wing tip.
Gary, are you going out to the air show? Make sure you stop by and see our beautifully restored Cessna T-50 Bobcat.

Bill,

When you're typing your post, just below the main text box but above the "OK", "Preview", "Cancel" buttons, there is a "Click here to upload!" link.  Click that to upload your photo.

Jim,

The article did not say.  It kinda implies that we're keeping it here in Dayton but it wasn't clear.  I heard the same - that they're (obviously) keeping Memphis Belle but giving up Shoo Shoo Baby.  Swoose, being the only exising -D model, would be a super addition.  I'll give the Museum a call today to see if they have more info.  (and as of right now, looks like Sunday's our airshow day!)

From what I hear, once the Belle is finished, Shoo Shoo will be going to Udvar on loan.

Great pictures of The Swoose arriving at the USAF Museum in Dayton.

http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123106554 Article does mention Shoo Shoo Baby going to NASM in trade.

One of my favorite actors is Swoosie Kurtz, daughter of Col. Frank Kurts, who was the pilot of the Swoose when it became the personal airplane of Gen. Brett of Philippines fame. She was born in 1944, less than a year after Col. Kurtz returned to the ZI.
You can Google her, or go to IMDB for her film bigraphy that goes back to the early 1970s. Bob

Bill,
Thanks for that great pic of Swoose.  I've been searching for one for quite awhile.   Mines Field has changed a little bit, hasn't it.

Hugh

When I took transition at Sebring in Dec 1942, I flew in C's and/or D's, also E's. I recall getting to 32,000+ feet, only by undulating , diving then gaining a little altitude, doing this a number of times.
