3531 Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company (Q) - Thursday, July 10, 2008 8:41 AM
I recently discovered that in February 1943 my father was stationed at a Pomona CA Base with the 3531 Ordnance M. M. Company (Q) before he was transferred to a base in Santa Maria, CA....and before he was assigned to Burtonwood Base (England). Can anyone help me understand what this company did, to what other higher organizational structure (s) it would have been attached and whether or not there would be any records about it? Would this have been a training facility, since it was shortly after he entered active service in December 1942?

Thanks in advance for any help....Roger M

I don't find any Ordnance Medium Maintence Companies (Aviation) (Q) with that high a number in the AAF Station List for 1 Jul 1943.  Are you sure of the number?  These units repaired motor vehicles.  Most were later designated Ordnance Supply and Maintenance Companies (Aviation).
Here are some QM S & M Cos (Avn) located at Santa Maria AAF, Calif 1 Jul 43.
1542nd (67th Serv Gp)
1543rd (67th Serv Gp)
1544th (69th Serv Gp)
1545th (69th Serv Gp)
1566th (13th Serv Gp)
1581st (61st Serv Gp)
1582nd (61st Serv Gp)
1583rd (65th Serv Gp)
1584th (65th Serv Gp)
(none were listed at Pomona)

The AF Historical Research Center would have the history, once you find the correct name.

Mark - The address given for him on Feb 3, 1943 was 3531 Ord. M. M. Co (Q), Pomona Ord.Mtr. Base, Pomona Calif. Later in the year (May 1943) I know he was at Santa Maria (but no idea of address). He left for England in October.

Does this shed any new light?

First, the (Q) in the designation indicates that the unit was formerly a Quartermaster unit.  During late 1942, Quartermaster maintenance units became Ordnance maintenance units.  As far as I have been able to tell, however, units numbered in the 3000s were not assigned to the AAF, but to the ground forces.

In May 1944, the 3531 Ordnance Medium Maintenance Co was at Halstead, Essex, England as part of Ordnance Depot O-615 according to a UK station list that includes both air and ground units.  It does not appear on the 14 Dec 44 list.
