I am not a well versed historian on the difference between groups, squadrons, units, etc.. But attached is a copy of the backside of a photo that I believe is a repair squadron (maybe the 40th) at Honington in 1943.  I am attaching the front side of this photo in another upload. 
Is there anyone out there who can help confirm the specific unit pictured in this group photo?

Very interesting photo.  What aspect of it makes you think it's from a repair outfit?  Do you have additional documentation that goes along with the photo?

Nice photograph, and looks like one RAF person in the middle row, eighth from left.
 
I don't believe that the photo was taken in 1943 though. The B-17G is a 'natural metal finish', ie no camouflage, and at the very earliest could only be around March 1944 when they started to arrive in England like that.

I suspect it is a repair squadron photo because 2nd Lieut Charles Wachendorfer Jr.  (#30) was an engineer in a repair group, I believe.  Please see recent photos I posted on the gallery from the scrapbooks of Charles Wachendorfer, Jr.  There are numerous photos that suggest he was at Honington, also theres' a news clipping discussing his contributions to repairing airplanes.

In 1943 the 40th Air Depot Group was stationed at Honington.  I am not sure if it still had its original squadrons at the time.  If it did, the 40th Depot Repair Squadron would have been with the group.  Contributor Philgrin has a number of station lists from the UK that might show if it was.

Based on a random sample of the Americans wearing wings of any persuasion on their uniform, only 3 out of the 23 in the section - at attachment - in your photograph, I'd say the balance of 20 non-rated individuals would indicate that they were not assigned to an operation flying unit.

The above having been said, I'd hazard an educated guess that your photograph is probably of personnel - including your 2nd Lieut Charles Wachendorfer Jr. (#30) - who were assigned/attached to an aviation maintenance unit of some sort, as denoted by the B-17 in the background.

Take what you like and leave the rest....
