Lt.William Marengello. - 06/26/2008 01:14:42 PM
Hello all.

It's been a very long time since I posted on these forums but i'm after some additional information on the following.

On the 31st December 1943, Lt.William Marangello was part of a formation of 56th FG P-47s on their way down towards the French Atlantic coast. Just south of the British Channel Island of Jersey, his P-47 peeled away from the others and crashed at very high speed into the sea. Marangello was killed and his body never found. It was believed he may have suffered from oxygen starvation because he did not radio any problems during the decent!

I have a couple of photos of him found at http://www.web-birds.com/8th/56/61st/61st_squadron.htm

I would like to find out some more info about Lt.Marangello and perhaps more photos. Also, does anyone know if his aircraft, P-47C-5-RE (41-6337 HV-S) had any noseart and are there any photos of it in existence? I am in posession of the MACR which includes some dramatic accounts of the incident. I believe Marangello had at least one combat claim, can someone confirm this?

Thanks in advance for any help.......Steve.

Steve

41-6337 HV-S was regularly flown by Capts. Joseph R. Curtis, Eugene E. Barnum, Jr. and Lt. Col. Leslie C. Smith

there is record of a landing accident on 27th September 1943 at Sta. 365 Halesworth, with Capt. Eugene E. Barnum, Jr., at the controls - there is no record for any nose-art (at least in my archives).

Cordially
