18th combat mapping squadron

Hi, I'd like to know the base of 18th CMS during 1943. Maurer lists the following: STATIONS. Colorado Springs, Colo, 23 Jul-12 Dec 1942 (bulk of air echelon at Colorado Springs, Colo, to 12 Oct 1943, and at Will Rogers Field, Okla, 14 Oct 1943-15 Jan 1944); Dumbea, New Cale- donia, 20-25 Jan 1943; Espiritu Santo, 2 Feb 1943-20 Feb 1944 (detachment of air echelon at Espiritu Santo after 4 Apr 1943). Newark AAB, NJ, 6 Nov 1947-27 Jun 1949. What does it mean "detachment of air echelon at Espiritu Santo after 4 Apr 1943" while the main base was the same? Max

Max, Dumbea was not an airstrip, was a camp and hospital area between Noumea and Tontouta. Dates for Dumbea concern only 18th Sqn HQ and ground echelon. Espiritu Santo entry 02Feb43 - 20Feb44 essentially again relates primarily to 18th Sqn HQ and ground echelon - - bulk of the air echelon remained in US, did not come to South Pacific, but a detachment of air echelon reached E. Santo 04Apr43. Cheers, Wynnum

Max, It was, and still is, very common for all service branches to send 'trouble shooters' to hot spots on a temporary (TDY) basis while the Permanent Duty Station (PDS) for such units would remain unchanged. You can see a lot of this type of assignment with the AAF during WWII. Bob

Thank you. I did not read it carefully. Do you know if a small det. was under control of 5th air force during 1943? A det. of B-25 was listed from late july to late september "on loan from 13th AF" with combat units of 5th AF. But Espiritu was quite far from the bases ofthe 5th AF. Max

Max, You say - "A det. of B-25 was listed from late july to late september "on loan from 13th AF" with combat units of 5th AF". That matches their absence from SoPac ops 09Jun43 to 28Sep43 - Maurer, 18th Combat Mapping Sqn). E. Santo wasn't all that far from 5th AF bases - like Dobodura, New Guinea 1943. A flight to Guadalcanal from E Santo and they were half way to New Guinea. Cheers, Wynnum

Wynnum, thanks for the info. Ok, New Guinea is not unreachable from Espiritu, but the other 13th AF squadron on loan to the Fifth AF was 67th FS, and it was based on Woodlark island that is well inside the area of the Fifth. Max
