Hi,
 
Many aircraft were interned in Sweden in WW2.
 
Some were flown and tested by the Sweds.
 
British and Luftwaffe aircraft that were thus flown had their national markings overpainted with the Gold and Blue Swedish Flag marking.
 
Is it known if the American aircraft flown and tested  in Sweden in WW2 also had their national marking painted over in the same manor as the British and German aircraft ?
 
I do not wish to include in this thread those aircraft from "Operation Sonnie" or the B17's that were converted to civilian use in Sweden, UNLESS they were flown with the Swedish Flag marking.

Alex, only Swiss markings I heard of were the "neutrality markings" ...... red square with white cross ... heres a Mustang pic from Sept. 1945.  Link to a B-17 with same markings.

I dont have the book, but "Strangers in a Strange Land, Volume II " is about interned A/C in Switzerland, and I understand has some pics of B-17's and B-24's in Swiss neutrality markings.
 
Well, my big dumb mistake .... you said plainly SWEDEN, and I read Switzerland ....... time for an eye-doctor appointment !

Only pic I have of any US A/C in SWEDEN (other than crashed) shows just overpainted American markings.  Not much help as unknown if they were left that way, or had the Swede insig. painted on later.

Yes Sweden - not the usual three crowns on a blue background with gold outer circle but their Flag, Blue with Gold Cross.
 
Several British and German aircraft that were interned and then flown in Sweden had these markings applied. I had expected that the American aircraft interned and flown in Sweden would also have had the marking applied too.

It’s not what you’re looking for but I saw several pics of US aircraft with Swedish makings in a current issue of a warbird magazine, but I think they were the ones converted to airliners.
 
This is a bit off the thread topic Alex but I thought I’d pass on that I have a friend who was interned in Sweden after his B-17 belly-landed just a few yards inland from the Baltic with two engines shot out. He was called to the American embassy, given a (German) camera and told to go around taking pictures. Have scanned quite a few of his pics.

Several B17's belly-landed and were later repaired befor they were returned to England at wars end.Others were so badly damaged they were scrapped.

I have never seen any photos of American WWII aircrafts with any kind of Swedish markings on so I got curious and asked Bo Widfeldt, the author of "Making for Sweden" about it. According to him no American aircraft in Sweden flew with Swedish markings (three crowns or the flag) during the war- unless it had been taken over by Sweden. When the American planes were moved to other domestic airfields they were flown, usually, by an American pilot and a Swedish officer, the American markings were painted over in a greyish colour but there were no Swedish flags. There are photos though that show planes that were flown in Sweden with their original American markings on.
