Identifying the downed P-38 "SECRET WEAPON" - 06/19/2008 12:03:04 PM
A book about the airwar over Central Germany includes some
photos of a "flak" downed/crash landed P-38 near Ludwigslust airfield (?).
Plane in Olive Drab and Neutral Grey.
With nickname "SECRET WEAPON" and a skunk painted on the P-38's nose.
Markings for seven bomb(?) missions.
An arrow on outboard side of left engine cowling.
A white circle marking on tail (for Second Air Division).
No numbers/letters visible.

Can anyone please identify this plane?
Date of crash landing?
What is known about the pilot?

Regards

Thank you Rick and Terry,
yes it is this plane. The characteristically "nose art" of this plane make's it possible for identifying.
At the time of it's crash near Ludwigslust, JG 302 was stationed there.
Gunther Sinnecker, a pilot in this "wilde Sau" nightfighter unit saw how the P-38 came down.
He told me in a telephone call, that the P-38 wasn't hit by flak.
In trying to avoid the flak-shells of the airfield flak, the plane flew too deep,
touched the ground and made a belly landing.
