In Marauder at War, there is a photo of an OD B-26 with a dark tail (black?) and 01 in white. Squadron Signal's Maurader in Action also has a photo of a dark tailed B-26. Can anyone provide more information? One photo of a formation flight with a single dark tailed B-26 (01) lists it as belonging to the 319th BG. Other OD B-26s in the same flight do not have a dark tail. Looking at the position of the number and tail number, I think that it was a 320th BG aircraft. I would like to know if the 319th BG (and 320th BG) did indeed paint any B-26 tail black. I know that when they switched to B-25Js, the 319th BG did so.

Grant, you are probably correct regarding the photo on page 37 in book B-26 Marauder in action (squadron/signal publications). Caption says 319th BG and that '01' has Blue tail. The a/c numbers are 320th BG as they are much thicker than the thin white numbers of 319th BG. 17th BG had red tail numbers and 320th had orange. If you go to 320th BG  site here: http://320thbg.org/phaircraft_63.html you will find more. '09' 41-34911 was "Little Sherry" of 441st BS 320th BG. I also have it listed as a 319th BG a/c, some of those were handed over to other units October/November 1944 during the conversion to B-25 Mitchell for 319th BG.

When you check for 320th BG painting schemes: http://320thbg.org/b-26_serial_numbers1.html you will find this description of tail number placement: Numbers were 12 inches high and positioned just above the center line of the middle rudder hinge. This corresponds well to the photo on page 37 in your book.

I also wonder if you might know the story behind the dark tail? Was it black? Did the 319th BG also have a black tail Group leader aircraft? I would guess that it would serve as a group assembly aircraft.
