Alex,
Dorney was a nav for the 767BS/461BG.

I have an Edwin Robert O'Hara with the 882BS/500BG.

Hello Dave,
Thanks for your reply.
Your O'Hara is an Edwin R., the one I seek is Edward R.
But I will now look at the 461st BG.

The men that are highlighted in Red above were all held at the same POW camp outside the city of Shumen, Bulgaria.

They were all liberated as the Russians advanced on September 9th, 1944.

This is a link to the POW camp being hosted by Bulgaria today.

Hello Lascotte,

Are you certain about the release date being 9th September 44 ?

ABMC has these men as POW's from 14th September 44 if I understand it correctly?

I can only speak for those names listed in RED. That was their release date from confinement, they then departed for Cairo by train and ship.  On the 15th of September they were picked up in Cairo by the 15th Air Force and flown to Bari, Italy.

    Hello Dennis,

    Just a quick question

    Isnt 42-28681 a P-47D-28-RA ?
Was there a typo error sometime in the past should it not be 41-28681 ?

    So Far -

    2Lt. D.L. Dorney                  --- MACR 8096 B-24 42-28681 461st BG
    S/Sgt. A.L.Thompson      Gunner  MACR 7628/7632 B-24 42-78182 454th/738th 2Lt. R. Roehle                  Bomb. MACR 6363 B24 42-95388 376th/512th
    2Lt. J.F.Wilson                  Nav  MACR 6820/8339 B-24 42-52701    485th/828th
    T/Sgt. G.W. Fanning        Eng  MACR 6374 B-17 42-31622 97th/414th
    T/Sgt. L.L.Fogle                  --- MACR 7674 B-24 44-41047 98TH B
    2Lt. T.C.Gajda                    Bomb MACR 8087 B24 42-78464 376/514
    S/Sgt. W.A. Glynn              --- MACR 8270 B-24 44-10565 459 BG/ 759BS
    Cpl. W. J. G. Lewis            --- MACR 8002 B-24 42-51300 451st BG/726BS
    2Lt. H.C.Lina                      --- MACR 7682 B-24 42-78229 484th BG
    2Lt. E.R.O'Hara               Pilot MACR 7693 B-24 42-78295 459th/758th
    S/Sgt. G.D.Patten               Gunner  484th/?

With regard to Cpl. Lewis, From his name I looked on the NARA pow list and found him. From his service number I looked again on NARA at the enlistments and again found that he was indeed William J.G.Lewis and he enlisted in Luzerne, Pennsylvania in Dec 41.
On Footnote I found William J.G.Lewis and the MACR number and a/c serial. From that I looked again at the database here and found that the date will fit.

However I am puzzled as his Nativity is given as "K1" i.e British or so it seems to me.Can someone please explain this ?

    Only one left nowto find
    Alex

    RE: 12 POW's What were their Units ? - 04/28/2008 09:38:12 AM
    Afternoon,

It was late when I posted last week, I ws only copying a pasting from AAF and Footnote and wasn't checking up on them.  it was more the methodology of using the footnote directory.

I've just checked MACR 8096 on the AAF database and it does list

    42-28681
    8/22/1944
    8096
    461

    B-24

    Footnote says
Page 18; 42-28681; 1944; Missing Air Crew Reports (MACRs) of the U.S. Army Air Forces, 1941-1948
Publication Number: M1380 Publication Title: Missing Air Crew Reports (MACRs) of the U.S. Army Air Forces, 1941-1948 Publisher: NARA Year: 1944 Serial Number: 42-28681 Report Number: 8096 Location: Yugoslavia Point Of Departure: Torretta Fld Italy

I don't have any publications about USAAF serials.  I can only go by whats on the internet.

Aviationarcheology.com lists this serial as both a P-47 and a B-24 so probably its a typo in the MACR for the B-24.  I read a thread somewhere about these kind of errors.

Thats all I can add I think.  Proves to check everthing I guess!

    Dennis

    Hello Lascotte,

Can you please tell me what your ref is for linking Gerald Dean Patten with the 484th BG ?

I have searched many of their MACR's and he is not in any I have seen so far .

Is it possible he was with another Bomber Group ?
