322nd Signal Company, Wing
-
12/20/2007 03:02:33 PM
I am looking for the Table of Organization for 8th air Force Wings. Specifically I am looking for the parent unit of the 322nd Signal Company Wing. Based on its date of deployment to England/Scotland in Jun of 1943 I guessing that it is part of the 45th Combat Wing but can find no way to confirm this. Is there some assistance I can receive on confirming or invalidating this? Also, is it possible to find out where it was station in England an later during the occupation of Germany. Or can you point me to a reliable source of information. Its succesor unit or current designation is the 271st Combat Communications Squadron. Thank you. It had campaign credits for Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland. Kip

On the 31 May 1944 station list, the 322nd Signal Co, Wing was located at Andover, England (AAF Station 406). This was the home of Hq and Hq Sq, 71st Fighter Wing, IX Tactical Air Command (APO 595 NY). On the 1 May 1945 station List, it is located at Vittel, France, but now has APO 374 NY, which means it is still with the Hq and Hq Sq, 71st Fighter Wing, but assigned to First Tactical Air Force (Prov). A Table of Organization does not show what units are assigned to higher units, it shows the authorized strength in personnel of a particular unit. If your unit arrived in England in June 1943, it may well have been assigned to 8th AF from June to Oct 43, but I don't have station lists from that period. You might check with another member called Philgrin for that list.

I might add that the 322nd Signal Co was at Wendover Fld, UT before deploying overseas. This suggests that it may have originally trained to support a bombardment wing, rather than a fighter wing, since Wendover was a training location for heavy bombardment units. When Ninth AF arrived in the UK from the Mediterranean in the fall it left most of its combat and support units behind and in addition to units arriving from the US, Eighth AF transferred units in the fall of 1943.
