Several new Disney homefront related posts on my blog and one new post featuring the original art for the 47th Air Depot Group, which was designed by Disney artist Hank Porter.

Does anyone know of any good military book publishers?   I'm wanting to get my research on Disney WW II insignia designs published.  I have documented almost 1,100 designs now.

Thanks.

The emblem you have identified on your web site as for the 108th Reconnaissance Group (there was no such unit) is for the 108th Reconnaissance Squadron(Special).  If you look at the photo showing the emblem on the drafting board, you can see that in that version the eagle is standing on the SSI for the 33rd Division.  As the 108th Observation Squadron, this unit served as divisional aviation for the 33rd Division from 1927-1941.  A later version (omitting the division patch and adding clouds) was adopted in 1950 for the 108th Bombardment Squadron (Light).  It is depicted in Combat Squadrons of the Air Force.

Hello everyone.

Several new aviation related posts on my blog including info and/or images for the 549th Bombardment Squadron, Corpus Christi Civil Air Patrol, and the first use of a Disney character on a combat design (Naval Reserve Aviation Base Floyd Bennett), plus info on several naval designs too.

RE: Insignia Art of Walt Disney -- 23 Weather Sq - 12/15/2007 03:40:26 PM
I see one of your new(er) posts on your web page is for the 23rd Weather Sq.  The 23rd Weather Sq was constituted on or about 28 Oct 1943 and activated 1 Nov 43 at San Antonio, TX.  It moved to Kansas City, MO (I don't have the date) and was disbanded on 7 Sep 44, when it was replaced by the 72nd AAF Base Unit (23rd Weather Region).  It was assigned to the Weather Wing, Flight Control Command (later the AAF Weather Wing) during its short existence.

Disney Nose Art - 12/20/2007 04:37:53 PM
The 343rd Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group had a former Disney artist working as a ground crewman.  He apparently did a number of nose art jobs...my avatar is a photo of a recent copy I had done by Gary Velasco.  It was on Capt. Stanton's P-38 coded CY-Y

Lots of new posts on my blog since last December.  Please make sure you scroll down the posts to find an illustration done for Digest, the Navy Airborne Electronics Division magazine, another design created for the Office of Strategic Services featuring Donald Duck smashing Nazi equipment, and a great looking insignia created for the 565th Bombardment Squadron's Group Automatic Flight Control Equipment Department.

Re: RE: Insignia Art of Walt Disney - 08/14/2008 03:29:58 PM
This has been a great thread.  I took my middle triplet son Sam down to the musuem about a month ago.  We spent seven hours inside.  Sam has a very high degree in both aviation and art, so he was extremely interested in seeing the Disney section.  I thought it was a great addition to the museum, but now realize that it was but a small part of the efforts that Disney and crew put out.
I will make a plea to everyone whether they have been to the museum or not: please go to their website and join as a member.  This is the greatest "FREE" museum in Ohio and anywhere that I have been lucky enough to travel to.  Great exhibits like the Disney one would not be possible without donations and membership fees.  I felt pretty sheepish when my 11 year old son suggested that we take out a family membership.  We did.
