Hot!Any V Square 3 Info?

Post
I'm looking for any information available on V Square 3 - my father was an electrician/mechanic on B29 engines in Saipan.  His name was Raymond E. Morgan and I believe he served the last 2 years of the war.  If you have any photos or information, I'd love to see/hear them.  Thanks, Dan Morgan

RE: Any V Square 3 Info?
According to Sallyann's web site, there were two aircraft designated as V Square 3. 42-24658 Wugged Wascal ditched on 1/9/45 with the Murphy crew. 42-24887 survived the war and saw stateside service as a TB-29 before being scrapped in 1960.

My information shows a V Square 3 aircraft (42-24887?) having participated in the Osaka raid of 6/1/45 with the Cameler Crew. Takeoff time was 0404, and landing was 1827.

Attached is the last known photo of V3, Wugged Wascal. It's returning from the Tokyo mission of 1/9/45 (357). V3 would go down shortly after the picture was taken, 670 miles short Saipan. This photo is from the "unofficial History of the 499th BG," 1981, by Prentiss Burkett.

Born in 1920 at Pennsylvania. Enlisted as a Private in the Army Air Corps on 18 July 1942 at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Completed primary flight training and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Forces. Underwent B-29 aircraft transition and combat crew training at Smoky Hill Army Air Field, Kansas. In September 1944, deployed to the Central Pacific Theatre of Operations and was assigned to 20th Air Force, XXI Bomber Command, 73rd Bomb Wing, 499th Bombardment Group, 877th Bomb Squadron stationed at Isley Field on Saipan in the Mariana Islands. On 9 January 1945, he flew in the right seat as a Pilot aboard a Boeing B-29 Superfortress nicknamed “Wugged Wascal” (Serial #42-24658) Tail Code: V-Square-3. It was one of 72 aircraft launched in a multi-group formation to bombard the Musashino Aircraft Works and Nakajima Aircraft Engine Factory near Tokyo, Japan. After the bomb run, his aircraft was last contacted by radio at a geographic location of 25 degrees +30 minutes North and 146 degrees +30minutes East; stating that they were having “operational difficulties.” He was killed when his aircraft was forced to ditch in the ocean approximately 250 miles east of Iwo Jima. The next day a B-17 “Dumbo” search and rescue plane was dispatched to the area, but no wreckage or survivors were ever found. He was declared KIA one year later.

It looks like there are memorial pages for several the crew members, created by SePennartz.  Here is a link to Kimmel  P Murphy's  page.  They give a little background on the person, then repeat the information on the loss  of V Square 3.
