Gary,
I think some acronyms were formed by the eye of the person making a report.
When I first saw your post the first thing that came to my mind was, "Died In Escape". Could find nothing to confirm my thoughts. Terry"s repy, KNB is more commonly used. However, it may pertain more to some type of accident away from the battle zone. DIE may have  been used to signify the death of an escapee.
