John Zadworny

I'm trying to find out any information about my grandfather, John Zadworny. About all I know is that the was a B-24 waist gunner flying from England in the 8th Air Force. He mentioned Jimmy Stewart as being his CO a few times. He recently passed away and didn't leave us much information about his war experiences. I would appreciate any information anyone could give me. Thanks.

Brian: I just went through the copy of the 445th records I have and I show no Zadworny as a flight crewmember. He may have been a member of the ground staff. Since he mentions Jimmy Stewart, he would have had to have been in the 703rd Bomb Squadron which Stewart commanded. Stewart was counseled for flying too many missions since the Germans knew he was with the 445th. He left the 445th (don't know the date but will try and find out) and was sent over to the 453rd Bomb Group as their Operations Officer. You might check with someone from the 453rd BG. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

    Mike,

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it. I started looking about this time last year, but had to take some time off to take a little trip to the Persian Gulf courtesy of the US Navy. I'll take your suggestions and keep getting his name out there. That's about all I can do. Thanks for everything you and your counterparts did for us back then. I can only hope to repay a small portion of that by serving in the Navy today.

    Sincerely,

    Mike,

My grandfather did mention Ipswich once. Does that help at all?

I'm one of the Baby Boomers - post WW2, but that's OK ... I know how you Navy guys are (being ex-Army myself)! In all seriousness, I know how difficult those deployments can be - I was in for both Vietnam and Desert Storm. Ipswich is, I think, in East Anglia, but is SE, either on the coast or near the channel coast. I think it might have been a B-17 base there. If you go back to the home page for ArmyAirForces.com, they have a link to show you where all of overseas bases were located in England.

My son is an E-4 with the 3rd Infantry Division in Ft. Stewart, GA. He's in the Headquarters Company scout platoon. His platoon was the first American unit into Baghdad last year. He transfered in from a Reserve Unit in Kentucky where he was a fuel handler. Somehow, I think his chances got better by becoming a scout verses driving a big fuel tanker with a "Shoot me here!" target painted on it. I'll be heading to Savannah, GA to visit him in October. We're going to stop at the 8th AF Museum there - I'll do some checking and see what I can find out for you. If you want to reach me directly, email me at 445BG@cox.net.

Take care and keep your powder dry!
