As to Maurer-Maurer's books, the original patches were authorized, however,
when several of the Bomb Groups were reactivated after the war, they had a
somewhat different mission at times, and the Squadron and Wing patches were
then changed to reflect the new missions.
Also, the 4th Squadron was dropped at that time.
The Combat Units book deals with the ONLY the WW II Units;
The Combat Squadron book carries the history up to 1963.
The Combat Squadron book, therefore shows the latest
dates of the changes to the patches.

Subject: [HeavyBombers] squadron patches
I recently borrowed a book from the library titled Combat Squadrons of the
> Air Force--World War II. This book gives information about every Air
> Squadron that existed during WWII and, often, shows a picture of a patch
> the Squadron. Some of the patches were "approved" during the 1940's and
> others were not "approved" until the 1950's.
> My question is: If the patch wasn't approved until sometime in the
> would this patch have been worn (or used) by members of a Bombardment
> Squadron during WWII?
