I am the daughter of Carl William Ward who flew in the 92nd Bomb Group and the 407th Bomb Squadron. He was a S/Sgt and was Right Waist gunner the day he was shot down. Usually his position was the tail gunner. He was shot down during the Schweinfurt Raid of October 14, 1943 over Dresden, Germany. He was then taken prisoner to Stalag III and later moved to Stalag 17b. The pilot was killed, Lt. Stafford W. Webb and I believed only 4 survived the crash, my father, the Co-pilot Harry C. McIntosh, the Radio man Sgt. Harold F. Cooke, the Ball Turret gunner S/Sgt. George J. Caldon.
I would be interested in anyone who knew him or knows more about this group. Any pictures would be greatly welcome and I would be happy to send pictures of my dad in uniform also. His boot camp was Fort Custer, MI and I don't know where he trained after that. He passed away September, 1993. Thank you.

Re: [Ruth Ann Godwin ] I am the daughter of Carl Will...
Hello Ruth,

My Grandfather was in your father's squadron. However, he was lost on his 18th mission, somewhere near Abbeville, France on 6 September 1943. I have lots of photos and news clippings from that year. The news clippings are from the Houston Chronicle, his hometown.

Good luck in your search.

Also you seem to have information on the POW cmps he was in....There is a POW section in this forum as well re the various POW camps.

There were 2 B-17's lost on October 14,1943 from thje 407th BS ....information obtained from the MACR section and inputting the date 10/14/1943.....a/c 42-30708 MACR 845 and a/c 30726 MACR 846.
