Have a serial number, but cant find any documents?

Hi everyone, I'm stuck on something and I was hoping someone could help.
My husbands grandfather: Richard W. Huard, DOB 1/21/22, Massachusetts
From what we know, (and it is very little), is that he was enlisted on 11/24/42 @ Fort Devens, MA serial no. 31255869

I have accounts with ancestry.com, and fold3... and Im coming up with very little. (frustrating!) I have a document off ancestry, that is titled US Dept of Vet Affairs BIRLS Death file. (that gives his death date, which is accurate). The only other thing we know, (or that we think we know) is that he could have possibly been some sort of medic? Before he passed he had one conversation with my daughter where he said he was a 'doctor on the ship'.

Is it safe to say, (and  i apologize for being naive), he actually served in the war? Meaning, (aside from the converstation with my daughter) he didnt just enlist, but did in fact serve?

.. if so, Im wondering why Im having such a hard time finding ANY leads on this solider at all. I'm relatively new with playing this sort of detective, but have had nice success with the resources ive been using.

Scott? help? hahaha :)

Is this him?
http://www.centralmassnews.com/Obituary-9750.113122_Richard-W-Huard.html

It says he : was an Army veteran of WWII, serving as a Medical NCO for the 922 3rd Transportation Unit, and was stationed on the Queen Mary military ship."

Kristen,
You can try filing a request his military records: (DD Form 214) at: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/ Attached is the letter I received from my Father’s records search; as our last name starts with “M” and he was Army “Armored” his records were destroyed in the fire. Some of these records on the periphery of the fire were not completely destroyed and have been rebuilt, but it causes a few extra steps in the record recovery process.

Note: See the last line of paragraph one, as this explains his; “Richard W. Huard” records may still remain as Army Air Force record during WW II were less affected by the fire.

Kristen,

The Queen Mary not only deployed troops to Europe, but also returned with wounded. These detailed records of these convoys were destroyed in 1951, but have been somewhat reconstructed through the efforts of this website: http://ww2troopships.com/ships/q/queenmary/crossings1943.htm this is assuming that it was this Queen Mary that he was assigned service with the 922 3rd Transportation Unit, as a Medical NCO.

Scott, can you check out the other thread I just posted? I tried to make my questions more specific.

Kristen,
Search the web for the Massachusetts National Guard Museum and Military Archives. It is located at 44 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA. in the old National Guard Armory. A Veterans' Shelter is also located in the building. If you are familiar with Worcester it is near downtown on the corner of Salisbury and Grove Streets across from the old Worcester Boy's Trade High School. They are open Monday through Friday 9:30 -4:00. Admission is free and there is an adjoining  parking lot on Salisbury St. enclosed by a large iron gate fence. Their phone number is 508-797-0334. Call them and ask for Richard Huard's 3x5 information card and his separation papers. Give them his full name, serial number and home town he entered the Army from.
Also go onto the U. S. Archives web site and get his enlistment information. On their home page at the bottom click on A-Z search. On the next page click on Access to Archival Data (AAD). On the next page that comes up click on World War II. The next page will have a list of files that can be searched, one of the first in the list is Enlistments 1938-1946. Search this file using his serial number.
I can tell from his serial number that Richard was drafted, it begins with the number 3 which were draftees.

Good luck,
Patrick

Re:Have a serial number, but cant find any documents?
I am wondering if it should be the 9223rd Transport Unit, because it doesn't make sense with a space in the middle.  Either way, it's not an AAF Unit, probably an ASF unit.

Kristen,
As you are the original poster, you can also edit the title of your post.

These links may help: http://med-dept.com/hosp_ships.php and http://www.med-dept.com/unit_histories/3_aux_sur_gp.php
Edit: I’ll leave these posted, but these links are less useful to your search than I had thought with no reference to the unit in question assigned to the Queen Mary.

Kristen,

Page 400 of this document starts the discussion of the Queen Mary be refitted as a wounded troop transport ship. Still no mention of the units assigned to her. As suggested by Mark “mbee53” this is beginning to look less like a USAAF unit and is more likely a US Army unit.

No apology necessary, with your delete and I believe a move by a forum Moderator, think it’s all under one thread now.

Pretty sure the unit is :

9223rd Technical Service Unit,  Transportation Corps

Not much found online except several " find-a-grave" listings where the vet had served in this unit.
Probably be more productive to begin searching with the correct unit name, and looking under " Transportation Corp " than under medical.

kristen,
Do yourself a favor and go to the county clerks office in the town of Mass. that he returned to,(if he returned to Mass.). They may have a record of his discharge papers there, (if he had it recorded).
I know for a fact that this method has helped family searchers in that state.

Kristen, WELCOME ABOARD!  I believe John (Yunch) in post # 17 may have given you a good "hands-on" lead!  Also FYI, I do see 6 posts on this Thread, but a total posted of 8 show in your profile indicating that, as Scott pointed out in #14, a Moderator may have "combined" "like Threads for the sake of continuity.  with that said, it looks as if you have some good leads here from the Membership.  Continued Good Hunting!

Re:Have a serial number, but cant find any documents?
Kristen,

I believe it is safe to say they are gone forever. I somewhat recall that original post, my suggestion would be to post it again. So time isn’t lost covering old ground please provide everything you know about the incident and persons involved, then ask about what questions remain and what you want to learn.  If I’m remembering correctly that thread ended up in a bomb group area of the forum, if you are uncertain which bomb group, post it in Heavy & Very Heavy Bombers //  or All Hands Club & Canteen and let a Forum Moderator move it to the proper bomb group area of the forum for you.

Re:Have a serial number, but cant find any documents?
if you have ancestry.com subscription,

there is a Cpl Richard W HUARD listed as a member of crew, US Army Permanently Attached.  The letters M.C. are after this mans name, the others on list are T.C.

The ship name was USAT 'Sea Train Texas' and it was arriving in New York from Falmouth, England, docking 23 April 1945
