The Mighty 8th Air Force Museum is just off of I-95 near Savannah, GA. Seems that the 8th Air Force was originally organized at Savannah before being shipped to England to "cripple Germany's ability to make war."
Anyway, I haven't been to the museum in almost a decade but this past weekend I went down to Savannah.
The museum is in the process of restoring a B-17, that has been painted with the name: "The City of Savannah" after an original 8th AF B-17 that was shot down. They are in the process of restoring that B-17 and badly need a ball turrent to complete the restoration. So if you know where a B-17 ball turret can be found, please contact the museum directly. I am sure that they would greatly appreciate it!
If you are driving to or from Florida on I-95, by all means stop at the museum-it is well worth the time. They even have a "Mission Experience" presentation that is something else.
How to find the museum? You can see the museum's parked B-47 from the interstate-just take the next exit and follow the signs to the museum!
