re: george lee jameson forster ww2 KIA 07/13/1944

I am looking for information re my uncle- 2 lieutenant -george lee jameson forster of the us army air force- KIA 07/13/1944- serial #-0-702032- He was a bombadier and stationed in Italy- My family states that he had accomplished the required number and he was heading home after the last mission-  The MIA report states that the crew members had to abandon the plane over the Gulf of Mexico- The departure/ squadron/ serial number, and the members of the aircraft are not known-

family stories report  "he could not fit in the space for him as a bombadier-He was quite tall- He chose not to wear his helmet?  The word went around- Remember Lee- wear your helmet?"- Again, that is a family story- He was, I thought, stationed in Italy and bombing fuel stations in Romania? He was buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery in 6/17/1949-I assume he was initally buried in Italy until they were able to send him home-Would he have been creamated in Italy?  I would appreciate assistance  in researching information re him/ his squadon/crew members etc.
Thank you -

There is a report buried on fold3.com concerning George Lee Jameson Forester, 98th Bomb Group.   In the page preceeding the attached,  there is a letter to the 15th Air Force stating that there has been a request for information regarding Forester and they would like the information in a manner similar to what is recorded in a MACR.  It is clear that in this case a "normal" MACR was not filed as no air crew were missing, but they did fill in a MACR first page (MACR # 5144)  with the crew listed (no plane info was given).  The crew list is repeated in the letter.    The Attached letter is the response.

The Tara Copp website has the actual mission report.  The plane, B-24  #260 was from the 344th squadron and the target for the day was Brescia M/Yards, Italy.

There is a lot of information on the 98th BG on the web.  In particular lots of pictures and things here:

Thank you-  I had a gut feeling that someone on this website would find the information- My grandparents rarely talked about their son- George Lee Jameson Forster-   I wanted to find out what he did in World War 2-   When I read the report, he became more real-and it is sad-  The report also clears up the "family stories"-I will look up the website you have given and learn more about the mission-  Thank you again-

According to my records; Lt Foster was assigned to the 344th Bomb Sq,  98th Bomb Group when he was killed by Flak. He was flying on B-24,  Serial Number  44-40148 named  "SILVER QUEEN". All the rest of the crew returned safely.
I have a photo of a crew PURPORTED to be his crew, HOWEVER the crew members are not identified and The aircraft the crew is beside is NOT Silver Queen. There are photos of Silver Queen in Volume II of  "FORCE FOR FREEDOM, Legacy of the 98th". Which is still avaible. VIA our WEB.  Click on the suggested reading page for ordering.

One crewmember, Norman Alred, is listed on my 2005 membership roster. whether he is still with us I do not know.

If you wish, contact me at BOMBGRP98@aol.com and I will TRY to help. However I am in the process of donating my archives to the  WAR & SOCIETY LIBRARY at The UNIVERSITY of TENNESSEE in  Knoxville.

Herb, I am not sure about the serial number being 44-40148.  When you look at the link I gave above (repeated below) of the mission report for the plane, it looks like the serial number would end in 260 (unless I am reading the report incorrectly).  Do you know what the full serial number was for the B-24  with letter "N" and ending in 260?

I see what you mean and it appears there is some errors in MY records. At the moment, I have not found the full S/N of 260-N in my files. NOR have I found the exact source of my data. As I said earlier, I am in the process of packing my archives for the Univ. of Tenn.

Thanks for calling my attention to the difference, I will correct the error.

Thanks for bearing with me on the above error I reported. Searching further, I find that George did fly on Silver Queen, S/N 44-40148-B on 7-12-44, NOT on the 13th as I had stated. Perhaps errors are not excusable, however they DO happen,  even on OFFICIAL documents, as is evidensed  on the sortie report of 12 July where his name is spelled  FORESTER.
