Bermondsay Battler Crash

I am looking for more information on the crash of the Bermondsay Battler, specifically, Gunter Specht's possible shoot down report of the plane.

I have read the MACR, and Surensprucher's (Uwe's) site about the plane.  I have pieces of the plane as well.

I would like to find out what happened as it appears the plane may have doubled back and tried to return to England before Specht shot it down.

Sorry, this crash was 2/22/1944 in the area of Detmold, MACR # 2935, IIRC.

There's only a few sources that could possibly answer that question.

Re:Bermondsay Battler Crash
Ach, it got moved to this forum.  Came back to check the post and it was gone -- Thought I'd lost it for a minute there! I had originally posted on the Heavy forum simply because of the heavier traffic, etc.

What's fascinating is that the MACR reports certain times and dispositions, but the claim of the kill didn't happen for another @ 45 mins - 1 hour and the crash site is at least that far away and doubled back on the original flight path - meaning that they may have gotten out of formation as reported in the MACR, then turned around and tried to return to England, only to get shot down on the way.

No one seems to have Gunter Specht's (pilot who claimed the shootdown) paperwork on the incident, despite the fact that his nickname was "The Flying Pencil" because of his propensity for extremely detailed after-action reports.   I guess it was destroyed by the Luftwaffe although I wonder if it still exists simply because so much detailed info on the claimed "kill" is available -- it had to come from somewhere!

I think that was the wrong MACR, BTW -- I may have given the wrong number in my original post, I don't have it here with me.

I show Maj. Günther Specht (Stab II./JG 11) shooting down a P-51 between Blomberg-Akland (E Dotmold) 2.000 m. [E. Detmold]          13.35-45 (Anerk: Nr.15)

I also show:

Oblt. Rudolf Klemm - 7./JG 54  (II Gruppe)  - JT-42 / 05 Ost S (51°54'10"N / 9°5'0"E) (Wobbel): 7.500 m @ 1345 (Anerk 234)
Ofw. Robert Roller - 6./JG 3 (II Gruppe) - JT-25 / 05 Ost S (51°57'30"N / 9°15'0"E) (Lügde) 7.000 m. @ 13.45  ( Anerk: Nr.70)

Couple of others but these are the closest to Detmold - JS37 / 05 Ost S  (51°56'6"N / 8°52'44"E)

Now of the two best bet would be Robert Roller

Klemm  -- 7./JG54 was flying Fw190A (Wesenberg A/D)

Roller  --- 6./JG 3 was flying Bf109G (Rostenburg A/D) -

Eyewitness states aircraft was shot down by a Bf109

Here's some more information about it:

And the reference to it from here:

It is cited as his 30th victory:

I attached the wrong file.

With no survivors, and the limited eyewitness statements, you have very few data points left besides crash location and initial flight path.

Right, that's why I'm hoping Specht's records may have survived and could shed some light on it.  I doubt I'll find anything, but it's certainly a curiosity.

Specht himself disappeared so there's no way to ask him.  Presumed KIA.

Re:Bermondsay Battler Crash
Another option.  Request the Eighth Air Force, Tactical Mission Report for that date.  It's held by NARA.

The report may have a section on enemy reaction, and summary of signals intelligence for the mission.  I'll post a thread showing what the information is like from the mission of my grandfather's crew.

That's a good idea, thanks.

Looking at NARA now, what would that be considered?
Part of record group 18.7.1?
I have not done much with NARA before so forgive my ignorance.

It's been...wow close to 12 years or so ago, and I didn't do the actual pull.

You can write the archive and make a request.  It's time consuming.

Thanks, I figured out where it should be from their website, and sent them an email request.  I'll see what they come back with!

Derek-
Read your Excellent Article in the 8th AFHS Magazine
RE the " Bermondsey Battler ".
Have you ever Posted the story of the 4 Bermondsey
B-17s on this Forum ? It is a Great story.
I have the History of 3 of them but can't find Serial #
of the " Bermondsey Special ".
Also there was a B-17 # 42 - 37792 JD B " Bermondsey "
Assigned 384th BG , 545th Sq.
7/16/44 Transferred to 487th BG
References show the 4 as Spelled Bermondsey.
You spell them Bermondsay - Which is Correct?
Cheers,
Mike

Re:Bermondsay Battler Crash
Mike,
Thanks for the response, and the praise!
You are correct, the spelling is Bermondsey.  Don't know how I messed that up, except that I always spelled it with the "A" and never realized the error!
I have not posted the story of the Bermondsey planes on this forum.  It would be interesting to read!

Thanks,

Derek
