My father was on a B17 and shot down over Germany on his second mission. He was a POW for 18 months. I have a picture of him with his crew. In the upper left hand corner of the picture is the following:
(518AB 3 G 42 470) CREW 26 REEVES GROUP
I am trying to figure out his unit information and potentially what aircraft name and ser#.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please post your father's name.  We can most likely find the information you seek through other sources besides your photograph.

His name was Raymond W. Barnes. He was shot down on Nov. 26, 1943. His account says he was in the 8th Air Force Group stationed in England. He was captured just outside of Bremen in a town called Verden(sp)?

Raymond W Barnes was the Radio Operator on 42-3165, MACR 1385.   The plane was lost on 26 Nov 43.   It was from the   92nd BG,  327th BS,  based at station 109.  The target was Bremen.  The pilot was Hugh Dougherty.    Barnes was captured at 1500.  His right eye was injured and he was treated at a hospital.  I will send you a PM.

Ron,
I´m living in Verden, and it would be nice to get some more information about the fate of your dad and the crew. Where does the aircraft crashed?

Re:Need help deciphering photo heading from B17 crew picture
Hi Jens-Michel,

His plane crashed on/about Nov. 26, 1943 at Uphusen (district of Verden).

Here is what he wrote from his personal account:
"I landed in rocks on the bank of a river and smashed my ribs. This was in a little village just outside of Bremen called Verden. German men and women came running toward me and the men had shotguns. I thought it was the end but they didn't shoot. They took me into a farmhouse and kept me there til after dark. I landed around noon. That afternoon all the people in the village came in to see what I looked like. After dark the German soldiers came for me and took me to an armypost."

The MACR states that 7 members of the crew were killed and are buried at Mahndorf near Uphusen.
My father was a POW for 18 months and was liberated.

Evidently the plane struck a framhouse.

Let me know if I can provide you with anymore info.  Supposedly someone has pictures of the crash but I have never seen them.

Ron,
I was little bit confused yesterday, but I found the right one in my database. You are in luck. Hinrich Barning wrote a book in german and in english about this crash with a lot of photos in it. The book is named: "Leidvoll ! To suffer". Link to German Amazon:http://www.amazon.de/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Leidvoll+To+suffer+Barning. You are right that the ship hit a farmhouse, which burned down.

Are you able to make a better scan of the crew photo? I need one for publishing on my website if you like to give your permission.
