Jaap - he was flying wing to Coleman - most probable that they had a mid air collision or simply lost control in a thunderstorm in which there were extreme ice conditions reported.
 
They crashed together N. Bordeaux.
Altogether the 8th AF lost sixteen fighters to bad weather that day in the surrounding area.
