Help with "the Hump"
-
05/17/2008 08:40:58 AM
Hi, I'm looking for informations about squadrons that flew over the Hump in CBI. Mainly from http://www.cbi-history.com/part_ii.html I learned that Trans-India Ferry command and Assam-Burma-India Ferry Command were activated in april 1942 and merged to India-China Ferry Command in july 1942. Later it became India-China Wing of ATC. From the same page I found a list of Ferrying groups and squadrons (Transport from july 1943), but all of them were disactivated in december 1943. It is not clear to me which units substituted the Transport squadrons and Groups after december 1943. Can anybody help? A list of units would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Max

Air Transport Command replaced these units with numbered stations of the India-China Wing. Later these numbered stations were replaced by AAF Base Units. Most of these are listed at http://forum.armyairforces.com/m_84751/tm.htm

Thanks. I found there were 1301 through 1373 AAFBU, but it is not clear to me which station substituted which squadron. Were only the "Foreign transport station" the former flying squadrons? Best regards Max

The numbered stations replaced whatever squadron(s) were at that location, and if appropriate the group headquarters as well. The AAF Base Units then replaced the numbered squadrons. Of course as the war progressed some stations were dropped or added.

The Group have authority on squadrons. Does it mean that some stations/AAFBU (former groups) had authority on other ones (the former squadrons)?

No, almost all of the Stations and AAF Base Units reported directly to Wing (later Division) headquarters.
