i can relate about losing the 'knack' for modeling after not doing any for over 20 years.  the best way to cure it...find (through ebay or other means) a bunch of cheap models and use them to get back to a level you're comfortable with before doing the 'serious' projects.  i had some car (...gasp!) kits in the closet that also came in handy for that.  found a seller on ebay that was cheap and bought (all 1/48 scale) 5 bf-109s, 2 fw-190s, 4 p-51s, 1 me-262, a p-47, and a couple of 1/72 p-39s, p-47s, and 1 b-17 for a grand total of roughly $50   for that price, you can afford to goof a little.  they have been an excellent means for re-learing how NOT to screw up !   wanted to do them before tackling the 20+ project B-17s (1/48) that i'm currently buried under.   one valuble lesson i have learned : to save time, test fit all parts of the model together and look in all the openings...use this to figure out the areas that really need paint.  it's nice to paint the whole inside just like the real thing...but if 80% of it cant be seen by any means once it's assembled, there's no real merit in spending valuble hours and supplies going crazy on it.   i hate to build one without over-detailing it,  but have only been frustrated by doing so and then you get the last part of the canopy on or glue the fuselage togther and cant see a darn bit of the inner fuselage details and that hatch you opened up from the nose back to the flight deck, the radio room door you opened up to the bomb bay, or the little bits of stuff you added to the tail gun position, etc...
not that it isnt fun though !
