RE: P-38 1/11/44 collision with B-17

Chuck: At this point I think you would like to make the case a P-38 was involved, other than a different type of aircraft, without knowing all the facts surrounding the B-17 which happens to be the key player here. You asked for info regarding the 14thFG, I gave you the summary via 14thFG microfilm, which seems you look for/or find an excuse not to use. You seem reluctant to try and obtain a AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT REPORT on the B-17 in question, to see if there is any additional information. Good Luck Terry T.

Terry T. I am puzzled...Am I in error ? I was under the understanding that if a MACR is reported, there will be no accident report...especially where a MACR is generated for an aircraft and crew, that just plain vanishes. A MACR by it's very nature, means that the aircraft was lost in Enemy Occupied Territory, or otherwise is Missing In Action...cause unknown........the closest thing to an accident report was the KU Report, generated by the German ground forces that reached a crash site. Tony Mireles has published a set of three books on accident reports but these only cover the accidents in the Contintental United States. They were not losses due to an enemy action, and therefore would not qualify for a MACR. I do not mean to question anyone's knowledge, but, if I am in error, please enlighten me. I have not heard of accident reports that also were generated alongside a MACR. ......IDPF reports, yes, ....but those were only generated by the U.S. Army Graves Registration, for deceased members, who were classified as MIA, and later were determined to be deceased, and who were lost in enemy occupied territory. Again, have I been misled ? Sincerely, Jim :-)

JP: Sometimes they have both a MACR and an Aircraft Accident Report..you have to request it.. I know that they have them because I have recieved both before..not at the same time..first came the MACR , then later I requested & recieved the AAR. Since the the B-17 may not have been a combat related collision, there is a good chance there is an AAR. Without making an effort to find out any & all additional information about the aircraft in question, besides zeroing in on one thing, limits ones abilty to seek all the facts. MACR's have been issued to aircraft which later turn up not missing at all, and MACRs from what I have seen the majority of the time do not do followups. Terry T.

JP this 1s for CHUCK: There is only a mission summary - because there was no mission!! 11 Jan 1944 48th FS - 14th FG Mission summary A flight of 11 airplanes flew bomber escort on a mission to the harbor at Athens Greece, but were forced to turn back before reaching target as the weather closed in completely by 10mi west of target. I would think the MACR would have reflected that there was bad weather at the time of the accident. Good Luck Terry T.
