info on 42-76208. - 01/25/2007 02:41:48 PM
Hello,

I'm looking for information about P-47  42-76208.
It crashed down on 11/8/1944.
The pilot was Charles C. McKelvy.
Can anyone tell me where this plane crashed down?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom
42-76208 was OC--J "Dodie Darlin' " ; 42-28845 was OC-P bar.  Both pilots were attacked by an Me.262 of Kommando Nowotny flown by Oblt. Franz Schall; Hoffert bailed out near Osnabruck , McKelvy headed for Belgium but was forced down (still in Germany) by Me.109s.
OC-J was formerly Lt. R.G.Vossler's "Lady Luck"; OC-P was shared by Capt. A.E. Bergstrom and Lt. E.J. Malo.

This was the day Maj. Nowotny was killed.                             Nick

Hello Nick,

Thank you very much, you gave me an answer on both my posts, about Hoffert and McKelvy.
Can you tell me where McKelvy's plane crashed exactly, or where he bailed out?

Thanks,
Tom

Sorry Tom----not exactly; the group left the bombers near Steinhuder Lake and headed foe home.
The 2 Me.262s (Schall from Hesepe and Wegmann from Achmer) bounced the 359th east of Dummer See and Hoffert bailed out just before his plane exploded.
McKelvy turned SW towards Brussels but ran into 9 Me.109s who shot him up well and forced him to belly-land his P-47 at 250 mph ; he was captured by German infantry and met the 109 pilots who were arguing about who should claim him.
He must have come down on a line between Osnabruck and Brussels............but on the German side.

I'll see what I can find from the 356th . association                   Nick

I may be way off line here but i can only find 3 claims by Schall for this date. all are p51s. Wegmann claimed 1. again listed as p51. there are 6 p47s claimed that day. 5 by JG2 and 1 by JG54. one of them gives height as 100 metres..
can provide luftwaffe map ref for them if its of any use

as Mike said, the Kommando Nowotny claims are shown only as Osnabrook. the list below shows the p47 kills on the Luftwaffe Grid Map. i dont have the Grid map to hand so cannot tell you the area.

Ltn Hans    Prager           JG54                  p47       GQ2. 1800m

MJR Walter  Nowotny       Kdo Nowotny    b24       no detail

Michel, if i was a betting man. the claim by JG54 is the one i would put my money on. it seems to tie in with the known facts.

In Bits and Pieces the MACR # 10430 lists Lt. Hofferts ( POW )
Crash location as Kappeln , GE.
Could the P - 47 have been 9th AF ?
