Mission 170 - 18th November 1944.
FO 1317-A Sweep - Mannheim, Germany
Time: 1032 - 1445
Several Groups of Me109's attacked and dogfights ranged accross from Mannheim to Dachau to Neustadt. A number of enemy a/c were shot down with out loss to the Group.
Following the encounter on the way home all in flights and elements went low to strafe their way home. Various targets were claimed but three pilots were lost to ground fire.

Lt. Vincent J. Spaziano (503 Sqdn) low over friendly ground troops was mistaken for the enemy and shot down by a "terrific barrage of fire" and killed. From Providence, RI

Lt. Allen D. Young (505 Sqdn) was shot down by heavy AA fire near Metz. Forced to his chute he was captured and became a POW. From Salt Lake City , UT.

Lt. Laird D. Travis (505 Sqdn) was shot down by AA fire near Kaiserlautern and killed. From Smicksburg, PA.
Lt. Spaziano was a former enlisted member of the 19th Bomber Group in the Philippines early in the war and received the Silver Star and a DFC for his actions there.
