aircraft mechanic work uniform questions.

Hello everyone.

I am putting together a AAF ETO aircraft mechanic work uniform together and need help on two things.

I have my coveralls and large bill hbt hat.

I am not sure what shirts were worn underneath the coveralls, if anybody knows what was allowed and what was commonly worn.

Was there OD olive drab rags, that you might see hanging out of a pocket?

Many thanks!

Deano

    [cool] Deano,

For the most part they wore tee-shirts under their coveralls. However, the weather and working conditions probable changed the norm from time to time.

    Hi Bill

Thanks for your help on my mechanics questions.

Do you remember if that was any color in addition to the OD tee shirt?

[cool] The photos I reviewed show white tee-shirts.

The OD t shirt was not an issue item in WW2. USMC dyed white ones "kelly green" but the norm was an OD singlet and white t shirts. the Mechanics sweater woud have enjoyed use as a layer under coveralls as well as a wool or flannel shirt (and pants) Any type of jacket including d1, M41, mackinaw and d1 parka would be worn (including procured flight jackets.)
I am unsure myself as to whether the rufout service shoe was issued in the AAF or if the toecapped russet type was more the norm. overshoes and A6 boots would be encountered for winter use on cold muddy english airfields.

I did not enlist until 1948. The AF was less than one year old at that time, however we were issued AAF uniforms including OD t-shirts, OD shorts, OD socks and even OD handkerchiefs.  In our outfit, white t-shirts and white socks were absoutely forbidden
