Z25 42-24686 American Beauty

Does anyone have any info on the AMERICAN BEAUTY (Z25 42-24686)? She ditched on Dec. 29, 1944 and the crew, including, I believe, my great-grandfather Pete Sandi, survived. I think they made it to a volcanic island before being picked up by the Navy. Thanks, bb

Bev, Per http://home.att.net/~sallyann2/lossdate.html evidently American Beauty's Pilot on the day it crashed was named Van Tright. Take what you like and leave the rest.... Andy

In checking the 500th Bomb Group book, I could not find a "Sandi" listed. However, I did find a Cpl P.A. Sanchez listed and he was the left gunner for Captain Van Tright, aircraft commander of Z Square 25, "American Beauty". I have also read the intel report which was done after the crew was picked up. It would take me some time to locate it on the microfilm, however, if you were interested, I would be more than happy to find it for you. I also have pictures of the nose art for this airplane and also know that it was painted by Cpl Johnson of the 882nd Squadron, as were many other original airplanes of the 882nd. Sincerely, Ken Fine
Son of Lt Kenneth F Fine, original navigator on Z Square 22, "The Leading Lady", crew #201. Dad had been with the crew since 1944 in Victoria, KS.
