What might my Dad have done in the 8th?

Please help me understand what my father's role in WWII might have been.  My mother recently shared with me that he was with the 8th Army Air Force and was stationed in the UK.  I was 16 when he died of lung cancer.  We didn't talk about the war so all I have are a few pieces of memorabilia and Mom's limited information about his service.

I have a postcard booklet (fanfolded comics) of Army Laffs he sent to my mother, his girlfriend at the time.  The postmark shows it was sent from Tucson, AZ, but I cannot read the postmark date.  It appears he was on his way to training in Miami at the time.  He wrote the following (caps, punctuation and spelling are his),

PVT. STERLING E MANESS JR
ROSTER 178
CO. B
FT. MAC AURTHUR CALIF.
AM ON MY WAY TO MIAMA, FLORIDA    LOVE XXOO
ARMY AIR CORPS ORDINANCE

I know he was not a pilot.  Mom said he helped unload wounded and dead and cleaned up afterward.  A photo I have of him shows him with a tire on the ground and it appears he was repairing it.  I always assumed he worked on the planes.

I also have a photo of nose art, but the "name" is cutoff as the intent was clearly to show the dark haired woman wearing a sheer blouse & skirt with a bold bra (and a girdle, I think?) showing through.  The photo is dark and difficult to see the detail.  It reads "PATCHI" and her ankles are in between the T and C.  The text on the side shows U.S. ARMY B-24H and there appears to be a crudely written serial no. 42-295219WW below it as the painted woman hides the official looking serial number.

Some of the men he may have been associated with:
I have a photo of men with the following names shown on the photo:  Hall, Shade, Mac, Potter, and Malone.
I have a photo of one man with the name Murray.

I have his dog tag (by the way, does the "P" in the lower right of the tag indicate his rank (Pvt?)?

Any help is appreciated.  We weren't a "military family" so I know virtually nothing about the Air Force and had no idea it was part of the Army in WWII.  Please forgive my ignorance.  I spoke with Mom and shared that my daughter is preparing to go to MEPS soon.  That 's when she told me about Dad's connection to the 8th.  I always thought he was just an Army guy.

From the National Archives WWII Enlistment Records (http://aad.archives.gov/aad/) there is one Steling E. Maness on record.  The following information was provided:  Sterling E. Maness, Jr;  Serial number:  39293997;  Resident of Imperial County, California;  Born 1925;  Place of enlistment:  Los Angeles, California;  Native of Kansas.
With this information go to the Research Help section above and you can request your Father's service records.
Thank you, Howard

The "P" represents his religion..."P" is Protestant,.. a "C" is Catholic,and a "J" is Jewish.

The correct s/n for the B-24 is 42-95219.  It belonged to the 458th BG and was named PATCHIE.  Serial numbers were generally written on the tail as "295219" with the leading "4" assumed.  The handwritten notation incorrectly added both a leading 4 and 2.

PATCHIE was with the 458th for a period of time.  First mission on May 19, 1944 and last with the group September 11, 1944.   According to the following by Tom Brittan:

B-24H-25 FO 42-95219               W         7V (752)            PATCHIE
            NMF
Repaired at Manston, Kent, 24 Jun - 4 Aug 44 - extensive battle damage, hydraulic and electrical systems.
No trace with 458th BG after truckin’ mission # 2 - 18 Sep 44.
Declared war weary.
Transferred to 466th BG as weather plane and finally assigned to 2nd AD Scouting Force.

I do not show Sterling E. Maness in the 458th records.  His notation of the serial number with "WW" could suggest that he was in the 466BG, where PATCHIE was used as a weather ship.

I have always been under the impression that the designation WW on the fuselage indicated WAR WEARY.
With that interim status--somewhere between Withdrawn from Active Service and Salvage--Ramp Queen, she would be designated for some non-combat duty---perhaps Group formation ship; Supply; Group "hack"; test platform; training or Weather Ship as mentioned above.

The 1452nd Ordnance Supply and Maintenance Company was a support unit of the 466th Bomb Group (H) at Attlebridge (120).  He may have been a member of this unit.

Hello Sonya, theres more!

Ancestry.com in their databases have an 11 July 1945 record for a Pvt Sterling E Maness Jr arriving in New York on the Queen Mary liner/troop ship in New York.
He is listed as having Military Occupation Speciality 958
I've found that 958 was :  958 Airplane and Engine Electrical Accessories Repairman
He was sailing with a group of men assigned to the

376th Air Service Group
813th Air Engineering Squadron
Airmy Air Force Station #146

Now I believe that men might be assigned ot units for the purposes of sailing home, they would be assigned for admin purposes, so that they got paid and fed on the trip home, they might not have served in England with those units.

I hope this helps.

{EDIT} Corrected my clumsy typing earlier!

In Dennis' message, the 376th Air Engineering Group should be read as the 376th Air Service Group and the 313th Air Engineering Squadron should be read as the 813th Air Engineering Squadron.  These units were at Seething supporting the 448th Bombardment Group.
These units were activated on 15 Apr 1945 when Eighth Air Force reorganized its support units.
As Mark pointed out if he was an Ordnance man  your dad would likely have been in an Ordnance Supply and Maintenance Company, Aviation.  The April 1945 reorganization would have transferred him into the Air Engineering Squadron, and his branch would have changed from Ordnance to Air Corps.  Although he may also have changed units  as a result of the shipment home, if he was at Seething his company would have been the 1596th.
The two ordnance companies mentioned:
I believe the 1452d was one of several companies activated by Eighth AF in November 1943 in the UK.
The 1596th was activated at the beginning of 1943 at Santa Ana AAB, CA which was not far from Ft MacArthur and moved to the UK in the fall of 1943 after completing its training.

I've checked that shipping list again and edited corrections in my typing in first message, unti names were typed wrong.

I note also the following men in the shipping roster matching some of the names you mention above:

S/Sgt Dalton A Shade 35330289  MOS958
Cpl Robert J L Malone 33418370
S/Sgt Donald M Hall 19087590 MOS958
There are a few names starting with Mc or Mac

these names Hall and Malone, common enough names and might just be a coincidence.  You can check there place of enlistment from the NARA AAD archives and mayby, just maybe they could be alive??

Dalton Shade might well be living still in Ohio, check the whitepages.

Malone was born in or around 1909, so he will have passed on by now.
Hall's enlistment number does not turn up on the database but he is among other enlistments in California, so from that side of the country.

Hi:
My uncle was the tailgunner for his tour on the B-24 called Patchie.  His name was John Boyd Mason.  Unfortunately he passed away in 2010.
Fortunately he did an interview that is availble at the Library of Congress -  I cannot get the link to work where I am currently deployed (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) but you might have better luck.
It is located at:  http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/vhp/story/loc.natlib.afc2001001.23137
Is the picture you mentioned the one located at:  http://www.b24bestweb.com/patchie1.htm ?
A picture of his crew is located at: http://www.oocities.org/mp4644 (He is kneeling second from the right)  The picture was taken in Texas before the crew deployed to England.

Hope to hear from you and good luck on your search for information.

Kevin:
Thank you!  The photo of Patchie is one I have not seen before.  (CORRECTION - I do recall having seen the photo on the b24 site in the link, now that I think on it...had forgotten it, but one of the members above had posted it.)   I have learned through the help provided by this forum that my Dad was a member of the 459th Sub Depot.  He probably repaired some electronics on Patchie and must have thought the nose art worth a photo.

Your uncle is a smart looking young man.  You must be very proud of his service.  I was not able to open the Library of Congress link, but did manage to search the site to find your uncle's interview.  I will listen to it.

Thank you for sharing and, more importantly, thank you for your service.

Your uncle was on Lt Lawrence M. Warner's crew.  They were assigned to the 752BS 458BG on June 5, 1944.  I have some info if you are interested.  Shoot me a PM.
