What bomb group was stationed at Vesuvius Field during eruption.

Hello In my research on the 38th Depot Repair Squadron I have come across numerous references and photos concerning the 38th being sent to Vesuvius to salvage the B-25s there. What Bomb Group was this? Does anyone have the history of this group and if so is the 38th mentioned as salvaginf the B-25s?

    340-th BG.

Popular information is that the group lost all 88 planes. In fact 14 of them were repaired and used again.
You can start with the war diaries of the 340-th here:

To my knowledge 19-th Service Group (1-st, 303-rd, 324-th Service Squadrons) was on site during the slavage works too.

    Dave,
I went trough some records and had my "star moment"! It seems that at least one of the destroyed planes wasn't from the 340-th BG.! A "visitor" from the 310-th BG. named "Tabu" was at the Pompeii airfield during the Mount Vesuvius eruption. I found the following description in the March 1944 diary of the 318-th BS:

for what little it may be worth.... A search of photos on footnote for 310th & vesuvius provided an image scan with  text on an accompanying scan. I added the text to the image and reduced size for posting here.

I do not see any identifying markings to confirm it actually is a 310th aircraft.  However, there were a dozen or more photos marked as 340th aircraft and only this one as 310th.

    Tony,
That's great - you obviously had better luck than me! Being just hours ago on the Footnote I was tired of writing search combinations like 310-th BG, 310.BG, 310-th B.G. + Vesuvius, Mount Vesuvius, eruption etc. with no success.
I've seen the above photo hundreds of times (e.g. here http://members.northrock.bm/~ehetzel/vesuvius.html), but it was never mentioned this is a 310-th BG. a/c.
I couldn't find any s/n for "Tabu" though.

I would be very interested in any info you can share.  I am the 57th BW Historian, and this is a obvious point of interest to our group.  I have a article that I will send you that will be of interest!  Send my a PM
