I need to stay off topic with this question, but did the shape of the B24 make it an easier target to hit? Also I wonder if a different formation design (shape, size, layout) may have been able to improve the "Flying Boxcars" formation handling traits?

I read not too long ago that toward the end of the war a new nose turret was developed that greatly improved upon the b-24's handling. The turret reduced drag and i guess the general shape somehow made the air flow over the control surfaces a little better. I think it may have been the erco turret. I article stated that this turret was developed too late to be integrated into the b-24's design.
