Vane Arms Pub - Pennies

This concerns the Vane Arms pub in Sudborough, close to Grafton Underwood. The beam over one of the inglenook fireplaces at the Vane Arms pub has several WWII-era pennies wedged into cracks in the beam and bent over. Local legend is that these were placed there by 384th BG (Grafton Underwood) airmen prior to missions and pounded over if the airman or aircrew did not return. Does this have any truth to it?
