Michiel,

2Lt Ross A. McCollom was the pilot of 42-31451 when it failed to return due a mid-air collision with a German single-engine fighter and crashed at Epe, The Netherlands. MACR 1934. Nine KIA and one POW. This crew was with the 306th BG.

Michiel,

The information I gave came from Project Bits and Pieces and differs some from that given by ron_R. Which is correct is anyone's guess. Take what you like and leave the rest.

Michiel -
In Book : First Over Germany - History of 306th BG:
Lt. McCollums B - 17 was hit on Right Wing by another B - 17 ,
Then Attacked by LW Fighters.
The Co - Pilot was Lt. Marcum E. Thomas
The only Survivor , Bombadier 2Lt. Lloyd Crabtree , Bailed out
and landed on the Roof of a Farmhouse near Appledoorn.
A German Fighter circled him as he came down but did not fire at him.
He was immediately captured.

Ron_R's answer is correct. I have the MACR as I have researched the air battle on this day in dept. The MACR has the statement of the sole survivor, Lt Crabtree.
