Travel/Tour ideas for 381st at Ridgewell?

Please help...my father in law, Clayton H. Cross, was stationed at Ridgewell late in the war. My husband (Clay's son) wants to visit England where his dad served and I would like to surprise him with a trip there. I need help finding a reputable tour guide - and historian - who would be able to provide a guided tour for a few days, perhaps, in the area... Does anyone out there have any recommendations?! Any help by way of links, suggestions, contacts, or websites would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Cathi

Contact Jim Tennet, who is the curator of the 381st Museum at Ridgewell. He will be more than happy to show you around the airfield, the buildings that are remaining and would probably take you to lunch at one of the local pubs. His e-mail address is: jim.tennet@btinternet.com

Another man who has dedicated much to the 381st who lives in the area is Dave Osborne, 0zzyfort@aol.com . Dave is the unofficial historian for the 381st and a well known writer about the Eighth AF. I have not had the opportunity to meet either man, Jim or Dave, but both have been helpful to me in obtaining information about Ridgewell I needed when writing my memoir. I wish you well on the trip. It is a beautiful countryside of East Anglian farms and small towns...as I remember. Near-by Cambridge is a must see for its great scenic beauty and history. Also it was a favorite spot for a night time visit on our "Liberty Runs" for a few beers and chance to meet girls.

Thank you so much, Mr. Gilbert! We have never been there but have read so much about area through the historical accounts that we feel as though we have! I will take you up on your suggestions and we will have a lovely time, I'm sure! Clay was a tail-gunner in the 535th, he arrived late and flew 18 missions before the end of the war. We have some of his personal notes, photos and a short snorter from the members of the crew he flew with. His son (my husband, Marc) is a huge history buff and has read everything he could get his hands on military-wise over the 24 years we've been married. Marc followed the AF lead, and worked for a time on the F-4 Wild Weasels at George AFB before it's closure in the early 90's. He is a private pilot and works at a major US aircraft manufacturer. Thanks for the ideas! And for the wonderful site - we have enjoyed reading everything out here - and are grateful for you and your organization's members willingness to share your stories! Thank you again!!!

Cathi: I would echo recommendations from Al and Bob about contacting Jim Tennet and Dave Osborne. I just made this trip with a 381st vet in May and they were great tour guides around the Ridgewell area and what remains of the base . I can offer some more suggestions to you about things to see in the area; the local pubs, The Eagle Bar in Cambridge, the museum @ Duxford, the Cambridge American Cemetery (Madingley) where there are ninety seven graves and names on the Wall of the Missing for 381st killed in action, etc. Contact me if you have any questions.
