The "War Horse" and Lt.Col. Lamping - 04/15/2005 11:59:19 AM
Hello all,

My name is Brian Peter and I live in Madisonville, Louisiana. My great uncle is Lt.Col. Clarence "Bud" Lamping. He piloted the B-17 bomber "War Horse" in the 549th. He currently lives in Oregon, and I talk to him via e-mail from time to time. I would like to know if there is anyone here who knew him, flew with him, or are family of crew members from the "War Horse." I would like to know anything and everything I can about him and his aircraft, and make friends among the "War Horse" family.

Thanks!

Hi Brian,

You can click on 385th BG - Great on the right side of the line above your post and look at the top post about Association, Website and Reunions. The membership secretary is listed and can probably give you some assistance if any of the crew are active members. You would have to know their names but your uncle can probably provide them. You may also be able to get some information from the group history. Good luck with your search.

Hi Brian,
Your in luck! In addition to Vic's information I found a website dedicated to the War Horse !!!
Check out : http://www.b17warhorse.fws1.com/ The only drawback is the site has a bunch of pop ups.
Here is a crew picture from this site. I would suggest you contact the webmaster to get further information!
Good Luck!!!

Keith,

Thanks for the link. I've been on the website before, but that was probably a year ago. I lost track of the link. Thanks again!

Brian:
I have read that your greatuncle piloted B-17 31864 on D-day. My father was the radio operator/gunner on 31864 when it was named "Remember US". At least I think that's the history of the plane. 31864 crash landed in Germany on 8/15/44, ten days after my father's last mission. Frank Sawin

Brian:
My father flew two missions on the "War Horse" 5/24/44 to Berlin and 5/25/44 to Brussels as Radio Operator/Gunner. His mission log was recently located and I found those two entries.

Does anyone know if Frank Mays the former Ball Gunner on the War Horse is still among the walking? I had his email addy, but suffered an electronic crash and lost all my previous contacts.
