Silent Wings Museum - 06/09/2009 08:20:13 PM ( #1 )
I spent a few hours at the Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, TX this weekend. I'd been to their old location east of Dallas but hadn't seen the new facility since they moved to Lubbock.  It's really first class and only $5 admission.  Will try to attach a few pics.

Oddly enough, I was there on Friday and Saturday.  I took part in a D-Day commemoration event they held as part of the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team; we flew our C-47 over for the event, and added some static displays about the paratrooper aspect of airborne for the public event.

It really is a first class facility, staffed by great folks.  I've been there three times over the last couple of years, and continue to be more and more impressed!

Here's a photo album with some pictures from the museum, as well as a small airshow we took part in at Slaton, TX:

Great pics, wish I could have been there on Sat.  Where is your C-47 based?

There's a C-47 in Ft Worth in D-Day markings about ready to hit the arishow circut. We also have a Stinson in British paint similar to the one in your pics in the museum.

Nextgen,

Good pictures, but I have question about the Southern Star.  As a matter of authenticity, how come it has a P-47 serial number and why are the stripes so perfect?

Good point, my souce bears out what you said about the serial #.  Will have to ask the owner when he's back in town.   He's was out on the airshow circut in is B-25 last weekend.

Next question:

Why is the number painted as 41-6531 when it would have been painted as 16531?

Or, if the hyphen is an error and it is supposed to be 44-16531, that was a serial number reserved for an RAF Baltimore VI (A-30C) that was never built.
