O.K. I'd like to know more about this mission.I know the 463rd BG bombed the Kalamaki Airfield. What I was told is that the Germans were evacuating their troops from there and that there were a lot of Luftwaffe Junker Ju-52 transports there.Back in 2004 I was at a message board talking about the 2004 Greek Olympics when I mentioned my dad had a mission there. Some older Greek guy had mentioned that he witnessed the bombing from the ground at a distance and said my dad's group caught the Luftwaffe off guard and destroyed most of the airfield as well as the large numbers of aircraft on the ground. From what the Greek guy told me it was pretty much the same as what I found in the "fighting 463rd" book which I later found in my dad's stuff.
I also see a description here.
http://www.milhist.net/usaaf/mto44b.html#44sep I see that on the 483rd's website of missions
http://www.483rd.com/combat2.html they list that the 483rd hit a Submarine base there at Salamis,Greece
From the 301st BG's website
http://www.301stbg.com/WWII_Missions.cfm they also list Salamis but they say Germany perhaps that is a typographical error.
The 325th Fighter Group lists an escort mision to Athens,Greece that date
http://www.325thfg.org/mission.htm So my question is where did the 2nd,97th BG,99th BG go to?
What happened? How many B-17's of each group went on the mission?
Plus did the 325th escort the 5th Bombardment Wing or what other Fighter Groups escorted the Wing.
Here is a bomb photo.
