Hi I am seeking crew lists for the 100th BG for the August and September 1944 period hopefully including a pilot named Lt. Albert M. Willoughby and crew. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Chris.

Chris, I wish I could help you. I have the AFHRA microfilm roll covering the 100th BS for this period, and were you asking about October through December 1944, I might be able to answer many questions. But the records for the months of August and September 1944 are not helpful at all. In August the squadron wasn't flying in combat due to a location change, and in September, the mission reports given don't include even a list of planes or aircraft commanders (whereas the earlier June and July reports list airplane numbers and pilots names, and the records from October onward give actual operation orders, with complete aircrews listed). Hi Kevin Thanks for your message. I am actually after information for the 100th Bomb Group, not the 100th Bomb Squadron. The 100th BG did fly missions during August 1944 and had been at Thorpe Abbotts since June 9th 1943 and remained until December 11th 1945. What was the location change you mentioned? Also there was no 100th BS in the 8th Air Force. Regards Chris.

My profound apologies to you, Chris, and the others on this forum. I easily get confused because I am both interested in the 100th BG (for many, many years now, and in fact belong to their Foundation, plus have met and visited with Harry Crosby, have several of the books and SplasherSix copies, etc.) and in the 100th BS (42nd BG, 13AAF), the latter because my uncle flew for that squadron. I subscribe to both forums, and will often respond to a query by following the e-mail alert directly to the message, and not by drilling through the menus. This is not the first time I just into a message thinking it was in reference to the other squadron or group.

Hi Kevin That's ok. I know it can sometimes get a bit confusing what with four squadrons to a bomb group and if you are interested in more than one group these things can happen. It wasn't until the no missions in August due to relocation that the alarm bells started to ring! Good luck with your research into the 100th BS. Regards Chris.

Chris, I am Janet Anderson, daughter of Lt. Albert M. Willoughby about whom you've inquired. My dad replied to your post by e-mail on 8/11/07, but since he's having some computer problems I also wanted to respond from my computer and let you know that he retired from the Air Force at the rank of Colonel after 30+ years of service, and he and my mother (and my sister and I) reside in Midwest City, Oklahoma. He and my Mom are in relatively good health for their age (84 and 82), and they and my sister and I plan to attend the 100th Bomb Group reunion in Nashville September 6-9, 2007. He was so pleased to read your posting, and will be more than happy to visit with you and provide any information he can regarding his service and crew at Thorpe Abbots during WWII. Are you perhaps a relative of someone on the crew? I would ask that you please contact Dad using my e-mail address - jeasea@aol.com - to ensure that we receive your response. Until just a few years ago he often shared his war experiences with students and other groups. Thank you for your interest, and best regards.

Hi Janet If this is the person I think it is, he was looking for information on Sgt Hutchings who flew 5 missions with your Father's Crew at the 100th BG and then was reassigned to the 94th Bomb Group. You see Hutchings had flown 25 missions with the 94th Bomb Group in 1943, then went stateside, became bored and requested combat duty and was assigned to your Dad's Crew. He ended up at the 100th BG and flew 5 missions with your Dad's Crew before calling in some favors at the 94th BG to get him transferred back to his old outfit where he completed another tour of duty, (35 missions), and in the course received the Silver Star, DFC with Cluster, Air Medal with clusters. Looking forward to seeing you in Nashville. The five missions Sgt Hutchings flew with the Willoughby Crew were: 1. 26/9/44 Bremen 2. 27/9/44 Mainz 3. 28/9/44 Merseburg 4. 30/9/44 Bielefeld 5. 6/10/44 BERLIN
