Searching on Information on my Grandfather - 07/25/2008 08:32:14 PM
My grandfather served from March 30,1943 to January 2,1946. I have his discharge papers but that is it. On it, it says  7th Det. 3rd Air Cargo Con Sq. What is this? He doesn't talk much about his days in the service and he is very scared to fly and will not fly. I have requested his medals, ribbons and paper work. A lot of his paperwork was lost in the large fire.

His name is Aaron F. Pinkelton. I do have some photos of him when he was enlisted

Thanks again for any help

Hello West,
If you look on his discharge papers you should be able to see his medals and his locations of service.  If you could type that in and let us know what they were that will help us, too.  Pictures are always good to see if you could post them as well.  I'm sure someone is running the name through the NARA records now.

Re:Info I have on Grandfather - 07/26/2008 06:56:28 AM
He was a Corporal. I just received the medals that they will be sending him. Good Conduct, sharpshooter badge w/carbine bar, expert badge w/ machine gun bar, aaf air crew member badge, american campaign medal (2) asiatic-pacific campaign medals, world war II victory medal and a philippine liberation ribbon.

His paperwork says battles and campaigns were Luzon and New Guinea

As I stated before it says organization was 7th DET 3rd Air Cargo Con SQ

I will get some of pictures today.

Thanks for your help.

Re: 3rd Air Cargo Control Squadron - 07/28/2008 07:48:42 AM
Athough I do not know where Detachment 7 was located, the 3rd Air Cargo Control Squadron served in New Guinea and the Philippines according to the campaign credits it received.  It was disbanded on 8 Oct 48, but was reconstituted and activated on 1 Oct 82 as the 32nd Aerial Port Squadron at Charleston AFB, SC.  Since the AF Historical Research Agency usually issues a Lineage & Honors Brief when a unit is reactivated which would show the World War II service of the 3rd.  You could try getting a copy of the L&H brief for the 32nd Aerial Port Sq from AFHRA at Maxwell AFB, AL, AF Reserve Command/HO at Robins AFB, GA or the 315th Airlift Wing/HO at Charleston AFB.
